4-year PhD research position at The Grieg Research Centre

At the Grieg Research Centre there is a 4-year PhD research position vacant.


The candidate is expected to contribute with a research project in accordance with the scope and the goals of the Grieg Research Centre. The Centre does research on Edvard Grieg's works, his historical importance and cultural relevance in the past and the present. The Centre's goal is further to contribute to international research on the diverse traditions in Norwegian music after Grieg and the close exchanges between regional music and international trends in the Nordic regions.


The candidate will be part of the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Bergen and is expected to contribute to ongoing international research projects at the Grieg Research Centre, participating in exchange programs with international partner institutions, joint workshops, conferences, and publications.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • The applicant must hold a master's degree or the equivalent from an international research university in the field of musicology. Candidates with a master from other disciplines of the Humanities can apply, if documenting sufficient musicological qualifications.  

  • Applicants must have completed their master’s degree at the time of application. Please note that the University requires the equivalent of a Norwegian master’s degree (i.e. 3 years bachelor and 2 years master, 300 ECTS altogether). Applicants who do not have a Norwegian master’s degree will be evaluated according to the regulations of the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT). The Department can send documentation of foreign education to NOKUT to evaluate if this degree is equivalent to a Norwegian master’s degree.

  • Work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral English.

  • The main criterion for assessment and appointment of the fellow is the quality of the PhD proposal.


  • Candidates that have already had a PhD fellowship at the University of Bergen cannot apply.

About the PhD positions

The fellowship consists of three years of full time research. The fourth year will consist of teaching, tutoring or other obligations. An agreement concerning the actual work load will be made with the centre at the time of employment.


The employment period may be reduced if the selected candidate previously has been employed in a recruitment position.


The successful applicant will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen and must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times.



The salary will be in accordance with level 50 (code 1017/frame 20.8) on the state salary scale, currently NOK 432.700 gross p.a. following ordinary meriting regulations.


A compulsory 2 % contribution to the State Pension Fund (Statens Pensjonskasse) will be deducted from the gross salary.

  2. A brief account of the applicant's research interests and motivation for applying for the position.

  3. A time schedule for the completion of the project.

  4. A bibliography connected to the planned PhD research project.

  5. A short summary of the master thesis (max 3 pages).

  6. The names and contact information for two reference persons. One of these must be the main advisor for the master's thesis or equivalent thesis.

  7. The name of the supervisor at the University of Bergen.

  8. Transcripts and diplomas showing completion of the bachelor's and master's degrees.

  9. Relevant certificates/references.

  10. List of scientific publications, if any.


In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on

  • the applicant’s ability to complete research training
  • good collaboration skills and an ability to join interdisciplinary academic communities
  • the project’s scientific merit and research-related relevance


Copies of academic publications, higher education certificates and diplomas must be accompanied by a translation into English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish if not written in any of these languages.


Publications that are not submitted as part of the application will not be considered.
