PhD position in Comprehensive Integrated Analysis of CO2 Capture Processes

A PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Chemical Engineering within the Environmental Engineering and Reactor Technology group. The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of until 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. (To undertake the teaching duties it is a requirement that the candidate speaks Norwegian or another Scandinavian language)

 

Information about the department
The Department of Chemical Engineering covers a wide variety of research areas including biorefinery and fiber technology, catalysis, colloid and polymer chemistry, environmental engineering and reactor technology and  process systems engineering. The Environmental Engineering and Reactor Technology group is the largest group at the department with long tradition within the research topic of CO2 capture from exhaust gases and natural gas sweetening. The CO2 capture research includes theoretical and experimental activities within screening of new absorbents, measurements and modeling of phase equilibria, thermal properties, transport properties and kinetics, characterization of environmental impacts, and testing and validation in laboratory scale and in pilot plants. Job description
The PhD research work will be focusing on systematic techno-economic analysis of CO2 capture processes. The purpose is to identify promising innovative materials and concepts for CO2 capture and to quantify their cost reduction potential. The aim is further to point out desirable material properties and process design parameters. The work will include multi-scale modeling and costing of CO2 capture processes as well as techno-economic optimization. We are seeking a person with good understanding of chemical engineering computation, optimization, and economics.

Qualifications
The applicant must have an MSc in chemical engineering (or equivalent). He/she should have solid knowledge of separation technology fundamentals, transport phenomena, and chemical engineering thermodynamics especially related to absorption with chemical reaction. Extensive skills within mathematical modelling of chemical processes and operation units in ASPEN or HYSYS are expected. Experience with economic analysis and cost modeling of chemical processes will be an advantage. The successful candidate should be creative and self-driven, with a strong focus on problem solving. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams. The candidate will be evaluated based on relevance of his/her education and academic results as well as engineering experience.


The regulations for PhD program at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies is required. Further requirements are an average grade of A or B for the two last years of the MSc program (within a scale of A-E for passing grades where A is best). The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test.  Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). It will be considered an advantage to also master spoken and written Norwegian.

 

Terms of employment
The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.

 

NTNU’s personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.

 

The position as PhD is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
