Professor/Associate professor in Musical acoustics

The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (http://www.ntnu.edu/ie) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a full-time professorship in musical acoustics affiliated with the Department of Electronic Systems (http://www.ntnu.edu/ies).

 

Information about the Department

 

The Department currently has 25 professors, 13 associate professors, 9 adjunct professors/associate professors, 8 lecturers, 72 PhD students and 18 postdoctors/scientists.
The Department has the principal responsibility for education and research in electronic systems at NTNU. The Department encompasses research and education within the areas of electro-optics; electronic devices and materials; circuit and systems design; acoustics; radio systems; and signal processing.

 

The position is related professionally to the Acoustics Group with four other professors (full/associate/adjunct). The group works with general engineering acoustics, marine acoustics, electro- and musical acoustics, psychoacoustics. The group works closely with the acoustics group of SINTEF in Trondheim, with 15 researchers, through the Gemini centre "Acoustics Research Centre". The group also collaborates with the department of music in the bachelor and master programs "Music technology".

 

Field of research and teaching for the professorship

The professor is expected to play a leading role in research and research based education in acoustics in cooperation with the existing staff. The position has special responsibility for musical acoustics. Research activities are expected to have a strong international profile and impact. The research in acoustics should have a long-term perspective according to the strategy of the department. The field of musical acoustics connects to several neighbouring disciplines such as music, musicology, psychology, hearing research, architecture, and cross-disciplinary activities in teaching and research are expected.

Candidates should have a broad foundation in acoustics and should be able to demonstrate a solid scientific knowledge and research experience in Musical acoustics. In addition, the candidate should be able to demonstrate a solid scientific knowledge and research experience in Psychoacoustics, and/or Acoustic signal processing. Furthermore, experience with musical performance is considered advantageous.

 

Responsibilities and duties

MSc and PhD candidates from the study programs of the faculty are expected to be competitive in an international job market. The professor will play a leading role in developing the educational profile in acoustics and ensuring an excellent learning environment, in collaboration with colleagues, students, and external stakeholders. The faculty’s study programs should have a strong international profile, and the professor is expected to be able to contribute to the development of international alliances and collaboration. The professor is expected to teach relevant courses at all levels and should supervise MSc and PhD students. Presently, this includes courses on musical acoustics and music perception.

 

The research activities of the department rely crucially on external funding, and the development of educational programs may also receive external funding. The professor is expected to work actively to receive research grants and other external income from the Research Council of Norway, Nordic and European research and educational agencies, relevant industry, and other available sources.

 

In addition to research and education, a professor is expected to be able to disseminate relevant parts of her/his research to a wider audience.

 

The professor is expected to participate in the formal management of research, education, and other relevant areas of activity in agreement with the Head of the department.

 

Qualifications for the professorship

The applicant should demonstrate professional qualifications within relevant areas of acoustics and profound scientific competence within one or more of these areas. She or he should be internationally recognized and able to lead and initiate research at a high international level. The applicant should demonstrate international experience and have a strong publication record in terms of papers in peer reviewed journals and other relevant international publication channels. She or he should document the ability to obtain external funding of her or his research from relevant sources.

 

Qualifications for the associate professorship

The applicant should demonstrate professional qualifications within relevant areas of acoustics and scientific competence within one or more areas of specialty. She or he should have a good publication record in terms of papers in peer-reviewed journals and other relevant international publication channels. Documented external funding and experience with research leadership will be rated positively. A person employed in the category of associate professor should have research potential which makes it likely to qualify for full professorship within five years of employment, even with normal teaching burdens.

 

Qualifications for either type of position

The applicant should have a PhD in the field of acoustics, or some other field that is relevant for the position. 

 

This is a strategic hiring to strengthen the acoustic research at the department, hence the candidate's personal aptitude and motivation for the position will be assigned great weight in the selection process, as well as the research focus to be implemented.

 

The applicant should demonstrate the ability to develop educational activities and the learning environment. She or he should have experience in the supervision of master and doctoral students or similar experience qualifying for such work. The applicant should demonstrate communicative skills that qualify for excellent teaching, supervision, and dissemination.

Joint works will also be evaluated. If it is difficult to identify the contributions from individuals in a scientific collaboration, applicants are to enclose a short summary of her/his contribution.

Formal regulations

Academic staff employed without prior formal pedagogical qualifications in university- level teaching, are required to complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification within two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses.

 

The professor should adhere to regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at the University.

 

Proficiency in the English language should be documented. New members of the academic staff who do not already master a Scandinavian language are expected to achieve proficiency in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years. This proficiency should correspond to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

 

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations for State Employees and Civil Servants in Norway.

Salary conditions:

The position as professor follows code 1013, and is remunerated according to the pay levels 69 – 101 on the Norwegian government state salary scale, with gross salary from

NOK 609 300 to NOK 1 269 500 a year.

The position as associate professor follows code 1011, and is remunerated according to the wage levels 57-77 on the Norwegian government state salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 488 900 to NOK 719 600 a year.

2% of the salary will be deducted as an obligatory premium to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
