PhD Fellowship in the area of Solar Grade Silicon Feedstock production

One PhD fellowship is available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, NTNU. Candidates with a strong interest in metallurgical processes and a master degree in materials sci-ence, physical chemistry, or a related field are invited to apply.  The present PhD research is in the area of “solar grade silicon production”, which is the main material for photovoltaic industry, and the position is in the new FME Research Centre for Sustainable Solar Cell Technology. The pro-ject focuses on the application of silicon purification techniques in which silicon is purified through the application of refining techniques. The project will require the use of high tempera-ture furnaces, materials characterization by advanced techniques, and hydrometallurgical treat-ment of silicon. The ultimate goal of the project is to study the removal of the impurity elements from silicon to obtain a feedstock for the production of solar cells. In particular, the project will focus on the removal of B and P, which are two problematic impurities in solar grade silicon pro-duction. The candidates with research experience in the area of silicon purification and in particu-lar hydrometallurgical processes are highly recommended to apply. We search for a person that is creative, innovative and can work independently, possesses good communication skills, and inte-grates well into a team.

Detailed information on our PhD programs is found at: http://www.ntnu.no/nt/english/phd
