PhD research fellow position at NTNU in “Reliability Studies in Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-dominated Power Systems”.
The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering , at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a 100% position (up to 3 years) as PhD Research Fellow at the Department of Electric Power Engineering (IEL) .

Currently there are 11 Professors and 6 Associate Professors at the Department. In addition, there are 4 Adjunct Professors, 2 Adjunct Associate Professors, 7 Postdoctoral Researchers, and around 30 PhD students and 14 technical/administrative staff. Research activities are organized into two groups: Power Systems and Power Technology.
Information about the Position and Work Description
The PhD project has been granted at the Department of Electric Power Engineering (IEL) to address the challenges in the Strategic Research Area - Energy  at NTNU, also as a means to support the activities of CINELDI . Further, given the cross-disciplinary nature of the project, there is collaboration with the QUAM lab  at the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology.
Reliability assessment is indispensable to the conception of effective planning and operational schemes in the emergent variants of smart grid realizations across the world. In this context, research focus is on improving adequacy in Smart Grid Oriented Power Systems (SGOPS). However, the extensive utilization of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in SGOPS makes the resulting reliability modeling complex and challenging.
The overall objective of the PhD project is to create a probabilistic framework as a means of decision-support for power system planners and operators towards quantifying the Smart Grid reliability in the form of suitable metrics when extensive ICT is introduced in the planning and operation of power systems. Special emphasis is laid on the interdependency between the power system infrastructure and the ICT infrastructure. The scope encompasses both short-term and long-term reliability studies.
The successful candidate will be involved in developing new methods and models for the necessary estimation and prediction of the reliability of SGOPS. Quantitative metrics that capture the interdependent effects of the power system and ICT infrastructures will be developed.
We seek highly motivated and excellent candidates with MSc degree in Electric Power Engineering. The candidate should have strong willingness to strengthen his/her background in the field of information and communication technology. According to the formal PhD regulations, average grade B or better is required. We will prioritize candidates based on the following criteria:
Skill-set match with the project description: strong background in power systems and good exposure to control and communication systems; knowledge of reliability engineering is an added advantage.
Excellent communication skills - written and oral.
Ability to work independently, as well as in team.
Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:
TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)
IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)
CAE/CPE: grade B or A.
Appointment is made in accordance with the regulations in force regarding terms of employment for PhD candidates issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, with relevant parts of the additional guidelines for appointment as a PhD candidate at NTNU. The successful candidate must undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme of study during the period of employment. The appointment has a duration of 3 years with the possibility of one year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department.

The PhD position is in code 1017 Research fellow, salary grade 50-62 in the Norwegian State salary scale, gross NOK 435 100 – 535 500 per year, depending on qualifications. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
