PhD POSITION ON QUARTZ CRUCIBLES FOR HIGH QUALITY SILICON SOLAR CELLS

The most common commercial solar cells are made from silicon crystals which are grown in crucibles made of quartz. This project aims to investigate the role of these quartz crucibles on silicon material and solar cell properties. In the project, we want to study different crucibles with regard to properties: standard commercial crucibles for multicrystalline ingots, high quality crucibles and new types of crucibles made with different sand/quartz qualities. The candidate will also be involved in the characterization of the ingots and solar cells quality, in collaboration with SINTEF, IFE and industrial partners. Finally, the materials performance and costs will be evaluated.

The project is within a large national project, KPN-CruGenSi, which includes NTNU, SINTEF, IFE, REC Solar, REC Silicon, The Quartz Corp, Steuler and Vesuvius. Therefore, the candidate will work in a dynamic research team and in collaboration with industry.

Upon completion of the PhD degree, the candidate is expected to be well qualified for a career in both academia and industry. Most of the experimental work will be performed at NTNU. However, the candidate will be encouraged to spend some time abroad. Applicants should have a MSc degree in materials science and engineering, physics or chemistry. Candidates with background (either master thesis or industrial experience) on quartz and/or solar cell silicon materials are preferred. Female candidates are encouraged to apply for this position.

We search a person that is creative and can work independently in a cross-disciplinary environment. The person should have good communication skills and be able to collaborate with other PhD candidates and researchers in the field.

Detailed information on our PhD programs can be found at: http://www.ntnu.no/nt/english/phd

Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree:
http://ec.europa.eu/education/tools/diploma-supplement_en.htm

Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work related duties.

The appointment of the PhD will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. The appointment has a duration of 3 years.

The position as PhD is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
