ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN MARINE TECHNOLOGY (MACHINERY DYNAMICS AND VIBRATION) – IV-131/17

 

The Department of Marine Technology invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in Marine Engineering with a special focus on Machinery Dynamics and Vibration.

 

The Department is responsible for research and teaching in the subjects: marine hydrodynamics, marine structural engineering, marine cybernetics, naval architecture, marine engineering, subsea engineering, operation and maintenance, and marine resources and aquaculture. The department offers several national and international MSc-program in Marine technology, including Marine Engineering, and is currently graduating more than 120 MSc-students every year. The Department consists of the two research groups Marin Systems and Marine Structures and is involved in an extensive research activity. The Department has access to a large laboratory infrastructure involving the Ocean Laboratory, the Ship Model Tank, the Marine Structures Laboratory, the Energy-/Machinery Laboratory and the Marine Cybernetics Laboratory and has a strong strategic collaboration with SINTEF OCEAN.  The Department was recently designated as the host institution for AMOS – The Centre for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems, a Centre of Excellence  (CoE) awarded by the Research Council of Norway. In addition, the Department is heavily involved in a number Research Centre’s including SFI  Smart Maritime – Centre for improved energy-efficiency and reduced emissions from the maritime sector, SFI MOVE - Centre for Marine Operations and FME NOWITECH – The Norwegian Research Centre for Offshore Wind Energy.

 

The Department has at present 26 professors, 16 adjunct professors, 12 in other academic positions and currently more than 110 PhD-students.

 

The new associate professorship is concerned with teaching and research within marine engineering with special focus on machinery dynamics and vibrations, fault detection and reliability. The research topics currently associated with this position focuses on applications within marine power trains for both marine propulsion and offshore wind turbines. The associate professorship is planned to have a multi-disciplinary and experimental profile and it is expected that the successful candidate can demonstrate interest and knowledge according to this aiming to develop both teaching and research activities in the interplay between disciplines represented by the department, i.e. marine engineering, marine structures and hydrodynamics and naval architecture. Some knowledge in cybernetics and industrial experience in offshore and machinery industry is an advantage. 

 

The candidate will typically be responsible for teaching a maximum of two courses per year and supervising approximately 4-8 MSc candidates. The candidate is also expected to build a research portfolio and be able to initiate research projects and funding for PhD students and Post-Docs from funding bodies and industry.

 

The successful applicant for a professorship must be able to document his/her extensive disciplinary qualifications in important fields within the discipline. His/her individual work must document scientific expertise in one or more parts of the discipline, particularly the specialist fields the Associate Professorship has specific responsibility for. Weight will be placed on the ability to supervise and initiate research and development work.

 

Weight will be placed on pedagogical skills. The evaluation of the candidate will be based on documented pedagogical material, including pedagogical education/training, the presentation of academic work, experience from supervising masters-level students and doctoral candidates, and teaching as well as other pedagogical matters. The evaluation will consider both the quality and the scope.

 

Academic staff who are employed without having a formal pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching and are unable to document equivalent qualifications, are required to successfully complete a recognized course that gives a pedagogical qualification in university-level teaching within two years of taking the appointment. The University offers such courses.

 

The applicants that have been short-listed will be invited for interviews and a demonstration of their pedagogical ability, usually in the form of a trial lecture.

 

The Associate Professor is to be jointly responsible for disciplinary matters together with other academic staff at the Department. The Associate Professor is required to participate in teaching activities in accordance with the relevant curriculum and assist in further developing the teaching program, including continuing education. The Associate Professor is to supervise masters students, research fellows and doctoral candidates in his/her discipline. The Associate Professor must agree to participate in administrative work.

 

The Associate Professor is obliged to follow the regulations that concern changes and developments within the discipline and/or the organizational changes concerning activities at the University.

 

It is assumed that newly employed staff in academic positions who do not already master a Scandinavian language are to obtain within three years’ knowledge of Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at an equivalent standard to level three in the Norwegian for Foreigners courses provided at the Department of Applied Linguistics. The University provides such courses.

 

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants.

The position as associate professor is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 485 700 a year. Normally the position as associate professor is remunerated with a minimum gross salary from NOK 485 700 to NOK 632 100 a year. There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.
