PhD position IV-113/17 in understanding of crack initiation and propagation in additive manufactured light alloys


Description
With the advent of novel production technologies such as additive manufacturing, new opportunities emerge in product design, which may lead to unpredicted material behaviour and poor compliance. The theme of this PhD is to develop understanding of crack propagation in additively manufactured aluminium alloys. Special emphasis will be put on technology induced surface quality that effects crack initiation and growth. Film deposition technology will help to understand and mitigate such effects.


Qualifications
The applicant must have an MSc (or equivalent) in industrial or mechanical engineering and a documented background in fracture mechanics, good understanding of mechanics of materials and ideally experience in additive manufacturing. Good knowledge in Ansys, Abaqus or similar FEA tools as well as basic programming skill in Matlab, Python or similar are a prerequisite. The candidate must have excellent oral and written English skills.

 

The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams. Proficiency to systematically carry out goal-oriented work, in combination with good skills to deliver oral and written presentation of research results, along with good collaborative capabilities will be emphasized. Excellent English skills—written and oral—are required.


The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Conditions
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.


Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.


The appointment has a duration of 3 years.
