Information about the Department


The Department of ICT and Natural Sciences (IIR) is located in Ålesund and has close links with local companies when it comes to development, research and student projects. This gives our studies a practical approach, still they are firmly based on modern theory. The Department offers three programmes at Bachelor’s level in Computer Engineering, Electrical Power Systems and Automation Engineering as well as a Master’s programme in Simulation and visualization. IIR also offers a one-year preparatory course for engineering studies. The Department has 30 employees and about 400 students. IIR is responsible for Mathematics and Physics education for most of the degree programmes on campus.

The position(s)


The Department of ICT and Natural Sciences has an opening for a Researcher or Research. Assistant for up to 12 months in Computer Science, to work on semantic technologies and Information retrieval applied to big data. Depending on the applications received, we may consider recruiting several persons for shorter internships.


The positions is part of the ONSITE project (Design Driven Field Studies for Safer Demanding Marine Operations), which is headed by the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, in collaboration with partners in the maritime industry.



The successful candidate is expected to apply semantic technologies and retrieval techniques to manage and analyse the diverse data collected from field studies on-board ships. We are looking for a candidate meeting the following skills and qualifications:

  • an MSc and/or PhD with good grades in a relevant discipline

  • good theoretical and analytical skills

  • good communications skills

  • ability to work independently as well as in teams

  • potential for research at an international level

  • keen interest in the wider context of own research, and an ability to engage in cross-disciplinary teams

  • written and oral fluency in English


A record of scientific publications is considered a great strength.

The successful candidate will be part of a creative and informal academic environment that places heavy demands on independence, ability to take initiative, and to cooperate.


Applications must include cover letter, detailed CV, certified copies of diplomas and certificates, samples of written work, and names and contact details for two referees. As samples of written work we ask for published papers or the MSc/PhD thesis. A maximum of two pieces should be selected.

The workplace is at NTNU's campus in Ålesund. Starting date is as soon as possible.

Salary conditions


Researchers are depending on qualifications remunerated in code 1108 or 1109, salary grade 57 – 77, gross NOK 488.900 – 719.600 per year in the Norwegian State salary scale. Research Assistants are remunerated in code 1020, salary grade 42 – 65, gross NOK 385.000 – 566.700. A deduction of 2 % is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
