The Center of Excellence QuSpin announces Ph.D and Postdoctor/Researcher positions

Several Ph.D. positions and postdoctoral/researcher positions are available at the newly established Center for Low-dissipation Quantum Spintronics – QuSpin (https://www.ntnu.edu/quspin), which is a part of the Department of Physics. The Ph.D position appointments have a duration of 3 years with the possibility of up to 1-year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department. The duration of the post-doc/researcher positions depends on the experience of the candidate, but the duration is minimum 2 years.


Information about the center and department 
The positions are in the Center of Excellence QuSpin funded by the Research Council of Norway. The Center is managed by four principal investigators: Arne Brataas (director), Asle Sudbø, Justin Wells, and Jacob Linder. QuSpin’s principal goal is to describe, characterize, and develop recently identified quantum approaches to control electric signals, conceptually different from those existing today. The vision of the center is to trigger a revolution in low-power information and communication technologies in an energy-efficient society.


Currently, there are 22 professors and 12 associate professors at the Department of Physics. The research conducted at the Department spans a broad spectrum of natural sciences and technology, which in turn allows us to offer an education providing a solid basis for future careers. Physics research is carried out in experimental as well as theoretical fields, often across conventional boundaries between disciplines. Research staff at the institute makes a special effort to increase the awareness and understanding of the importance and impact of physics in our society. Job description 
The candidates will join Center of Excellence QuSpin and become part of an excellent research environment in quantum condensed matter theory and experiments. There are currently 13 Ph.D students and 7 postdoctoral researchers working on various aspects of low-dissipation spintronics in the Center. This includes both theoretical and experimental activity. The candidates for these positions will develop theoretical models and/or conduct experimental measurements related to transport of spin and other degrees of freedom in magnetic insulators, topological insulators, and superconductors. The aim is to develop a new or improved understanding of spin transport and spin dynamics in novel nano-structured hybrid systems. Such an understanding can assist in developing new spintronics concepts where only spins flow, but no electric charges. In this round, it is likely that at least three Ph.D positions with focus on (i) topological matter (theory), (ii) superconductors (theory), and (iii) experimental activities related to spin-physics will be filled. The candidate should specify in the application which of these topics he or she would prefer to work on during the Ph.D thesis.


For the Ph.D positions in experimental physics, the candidates will initially focus on the construction of a new laboratory with the capability of performing spatially resolved and spin resolved band structure measurements. Measurements will be performed in our existing laboratories and in collaborators laboratories and synchrotron facilities abroad.


For the researcher/postdoctoral positions, we ask that the candidates give a detailed description in their application concerning which research topic they will contribute to in QuSpin and how their scientific background enables them to make a valuable contribution. An ability to contribute to more than one activity/topic within QuSpin should be specified and will be seen as an advantage.


The applicant for the Ph.D positions must have an MSc (or equivalent) in physics or nanotechnology or a closely related field. Aspiring candidates should be strongly motivated and ambitious. For the theory positions, we require a solid background in condensed matter theory or related theoretical areas in physics or nanotechnology. For the experimental positions, the requirements are similar in experimental physics. He/she has to demonstrate good basic knowledge in solid state physics and quantum physics. The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. We will not consider candidates with a Ph.D. degree for the Ph.D positions.


The applicant for the postdoctoral positions must have a Ph.D degree in condensed matter physics, and preference will be given to candidates with a scientifically documented background in quantum transport and/or spintronics.


The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Such evidence might be represented by the results of standard tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). The candidate's language skills might also be assessed in a personal interview.


Terms of employment 
The appointment of the Ph.D fellows and the postdoctoral/research positions will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants for the Ph.D positions must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study. 


NTNU's personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.


The positions are remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
