Post doc position for experimental single fluid particle breakage investigations

A Post doc position is available at the Department of Chemical Engineering, NTNU for research work within the Environmental Engineering and Reactor Technology group. The position is devoted to the experimental characterization of single fluid particle breakage events in turbulent flow. The appointment has a duration of 2 years. The position is financed by through the Subsea production and processing (SUBPRO) program: www.ntnu.edu/subpro. This Post doc has a special responsibility for the project “fluid particle breakage experiments”.

Job description
Improved understanding of the fluid particle breakage phenomena are required in order to develop models and optimize the design and performance of subsea phase separator units.       

In this research project, we consider liquid-liquid systems and aim at employing the population balance model (PBE) to predict the drop size distribution locally within the separators. To enable reliable predictions of the evolution of the drop size distribution in phase separators, improved understanding of the breakage phenomena is required in order to develop accurate breakage closure laws. The Post doc will be responsible for performing experiments of single fluid particle breakage in turbulent flow by use of the high-speed camera imaging technique. For each breakage event, the important parameters to determine are; 1) mother drop size, 2) breakage time, 3) number of daughter drops, and 4) size distribution of the daughter drops. The number fraction of injected drops breaking also determine 5) probability of breakage. The Post doc may also be involved in the task of characterizing the flow in the experimental setup to determine the local turbulent energy dissipation rate by use of PIV or LDA. The breakage rate is very sensitive to this quantity.    

The applicant must have a PhD in chemical engineering, fluid mechanics, physics, or related disciplines, and a documented background in experimental work relevant for this project. Experience in experimental work using high-speed cameras and performing image analysis is an advantage.

The successful candidate should be creative, independent with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams.

The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language.

The appointment of the Post doc fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.

NTNU’s personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent.

The position as Post doc is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
