NTNU - knowledge for a better world

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life.

PhD positions in Systems and Network Biology

Two PhD positions are available at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science. One position is financed by the Research Council of Norway through the ERAnet program ERA-IB2, the other is financed by the K.G. Jebsen Center for Genetic Epidemiology. The appointments have a duration of 3 years with a possible one year extension with 25 % teaching duties in agreement with the Department (to undertake the teaching duties it is a requirement that the candidate speaks Norwegian or another Scandinavian language).

Job descriptions

ERA-IB2 project “PolyBugs - In vivo cascades for sustainable access to monomers of high volume polymers”

Polymers have become increasingly important to our everyday lives and contribute significantly to value generation in our economies, e.g. in high end applications in cars, planes, or medical equipment to items of daily use. The aim of the project is to take advantage of the highly active cyclohexane degrading enzymes of the respective degradation pathways and develop a solvent tolerant, biofilm forming Pseudomonas strain as a true platform organism for the synthesis of various polymer building blocks starting from cyclohexane. The candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary research team with broad international experience and will play a central role in the systems biology data analysis and computational modeling to develop a platform organism. Focus will be on complex network analysis and constraint-based optimization of metabolism, such as Flux Balance Analysis (FBA), to identify strategies for strain engineering.

K.G. Jebsen Center for Genetic Epidemiology

The aim of the K.G. Jebsen Center for Genetic Epidemiology is to better understand human health and disease by studying genomic variation in populations. The center will primarily work on the translational axis between population-based and laboratory-based research. The candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary research team with broad international experience. The candidate’s research focus will be the computational modeling of the relationship between genome and disease states in the HUNT sample population, using both tools from complex network analysis and constraint-based optimization of metabolism.

Qualifications for both positions

The successful applicants will have M.Sc. degree (or it will be completed spring 2016) with an average grade point of B or better, within Systems Biology, Computational Biology, Biostatistics, Physics, Biochemistry, Biology, or a closely related field. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of basic biology / biochemistry and experience with programming. Experience with network analysis and constraint-based analysis will be considered an advantage, but not a requirement. The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams.

The regulations for PhD programs at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Candidates from universities outside Norway are kindly requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study and grade system and the rights for further studies associated with the obtained degree:

The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test, which are TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English(CAE)  or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Terms of employment

The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.

NTNU’s personnel policy objective is that the staff must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent. The position as PhD is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
