PhD position within the use of domestic hot water (DHW) in Norway


A PhD position is available within the research project "Energy for domestic hot water in the Norwegian low emission society" (VarmtVann2030). In this project, building owners and suppliers work together with SINTEF and NTNU to increase the knowledge of the use of domestic hot water (DHW) in Norway. After gaining knowledge about the use of hot water in different types of buildings, the project will propose more energy efficient and environmentally friendly solutions.

The PhD position is available within the Energy and Indoor Environment research group at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) at NTNU. The Energy and Indoor Environment group has a well-established expertise within energy supply systems and building energy services. Currently, the group consists of six scientific members, one Postdoctoral fellow, and five PhD candidates. The group will increase with five new PhD candidates within 2017. Research activities within the group range from building energy use, building energy supply, indoor environment, energy efficiency, building services, control and automation, energy planning to building performance modelling and simulation. The group is responsible for the HVAC laboratory at the institute.

The PhD candidate will work closely with the project group at SINTEF Building and Infrastructure. Three research groups are involved, all located in Oslo: Energy and indoor air quality; Sanitary engineering and wet-room systems; and the Laboratory group. SINTEF is the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia, creating value through knowledge generation, research and innovation, and the development of technological solutions that are brought into practical use.

Both EPT at NTNU and SINTEF Building and Infrastructure are involved in the Norwegian Research Centre on Zero Emission Neighbourhoods in Smart Cities (ZEN Centre).

The project VarmtVann2030

In the future low-emission society, there is a need for efficient and smart DHW systems and management. Knowledge about actual use of DHW is important when planning, designing and operating heating systems. Increased knowledge about the DHW use and system solutions is needed, as a basis for new technological solutions and smart management.

Residential buildings, nursing homes and hotels are in focus in VarmtVann2030. These building categories have a high demand for hot water, and also represent a large number of comparable buildings. Measurements will be made in apartments from OBOS and Boligbygg, nursing homes from Drammen eiendom and Omsorgsbygg, and hotels from Olav Thon. The product suppliers Armaturjonsson, Høiax, Geberit and Uponor are also a part of the project.

Work description

The PhD-student will perform research within the project, in close cooperation with SINTEF and the project partners. Information will be collected on use of DHW in a large number of buildings. Key operating parameters will be observed. The data will be organised and analysed according to statistical methods and software tools. Important variables and typical DHW profiles will be identified, to be able to simulate and evaluate DHW demand more accurate. New solutions for energy efficient and environmentally friendly DHW systems will be evaluated.


Applicants are strictly advised to address the following selection criteria:
- A highly motivated candidate with a Master's degree (or equivalent) within HVAC systems for buildings, energy engineering or related field.
- Good mathematical knowledge and analytical skills.
- Practical experiences within HVAC systems or energy use in buildings is an advantage.
- Experience and knowledge of energy measurements.
- Experience with analysing large dataset, e.g. using MATLAB, SPSS or similar tools.
- Experience with using building energy simulation tools, e.g. IDA-ICE.
- Fluent Scandinavian written and spoken language. Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
- Excellent communication skills with both technical and administrative staff.
- Ability to work independently and to take initiatives.

The PhD student will mainly be located in Oslo, after an initial period in Trondheim. Research visits to Belgium and Scandinavia are possible.

PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 before tax. There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.


Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.


The successful candidate will be employed full-time by NTNU for a fixed period of three years. A part-time employment of four years can be discussed.
