The geosciences are the studies of planet Earth; the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and cryosphere, the earth's surface and it’s interior. The Department of Geosciences is Norway’s widest ranging academic geoscience research environment, encompassing four sections (Meteorology and Oceanography, Geography and Hydrology, Geology and Geophysics, Physics of Geological Processes) and one Centre of Excellence (Centre of Earth Evolution and Dynamics). In addition we participate in other centres and hold several ERC grants. The staff consists of 40 professors and associate professors, in addition to postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, researchers, technical staff and administrative personnel, to a total number of 240.

PhD Research Fellowship in Glacier and Permafrost remote sensing

 A position as PhD Research Fellow position code 1017) is available at the Department of Geosciences.


The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work or for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at the department) contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department. Starting date no later than 01.10.2017.


No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.


Job description:

We are looking for an ambitious and independent scientist who will pursue her or his own line of research relating to analysing, modelling, assimilating or else integrating remotely sensed data of glaciers and/or permafrost on local to global scale. The position allows the successful candidate a great freedom of choice of the specific research topic, highly depending on his or her interest and competence. We offer a lively, friendly and collaborative research environment in cold regions sciences, in particular in glaciology, remote sensing, geohazards, and geomatics. We participate in projects by the European Union and the European Space Agency such that the successful candidate will have excellent opportunity to participate in international research networks.

The position is affiliated with the Section for Physical Geography and Hydrology of the Department of Geosciences, which has long-term experience in investigating the terrestrial cryosphere (snow, glaciers, permafrost) and is involved in various high-level research projects and centers. Requirements and qualifications:

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for this fellowship will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the department no later than two months after taking up the position. For more information see:

A good command of English is required.

Doctoral degree: PhD in Mathematics and Natural Sciences

The candidate should have experience in the quantitative exploitation of remotely sensed data related to glaciers, permafrost (lowland and/or mountain), or related natural hazards.


The position requires thus a strong background and interest in

  • Optical and/or radar remote sensing and/or photogrammetry;
  • Glaciological theory and practice;
  • Geoinformatics (GIS);
  • Numerical modelling and programming (Matlab, IDL, Python, or similar languages).

Good knowledge of one Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish) is of advantage.


Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in geomatics, physical geography, geophysics, geosciences, mathematics, physics, or similar.


Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June, 2017 to complete the final exam.


The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.




Position code 1017, Salary: NOK 432 700 – 489 300 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority.
