The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics. The Department has near 950 students on bachelor level, near 450 master students, and over 180 PhD students. The overall staff of the Department is close to 250 employees, about 200 of these are full time positions. The full time scientific staff is 60, mostly Full/Associate Professors.
PhD Research Fellowships in Informatics - seven positions
The Department of Informatics (IFI) at the University of Oslo (UiO) seeks well qualified applicants for 7 PhD research fellowship positions.
A number of different PhD projects are offered by very competent supervisors.
Detailed descriptions of the projects being offered can be found on the Project Page, together with links to CV’s of the supervisors and links to more information about the various research groups at IFI.
A special feature of this announcement is that the applicant is allowed to select up to 3 projects (in prioritized order), and that the interests of the best applicants will determine which seven projects that are actually financed.
To apply for one of these seven doctoral fellowships you will need to select at least one – but up to three - of the projects that are described in some detail in the Projects Page.
If the successful candidate has a good knowledge of a Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish), the fellowship will be for a period of 4 years, with 25 % compulsory work (teaching responsibilities at the Department). Otherwise, the fellowship will normally be for a period of 3 years, with no compulsory work. Starting date no later than 01.10.2017.
No one can be appointed for more than one fixed-term period at the same institution.
Requirements and qualifications:
The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in computer science or related areas. Candidates without a Master’s degree have until 30 June, 2017 to complete the final exam.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The fellowship requires admission to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The application to the PhD programme must be submitted to the Department no later than two months after taking up the position. For more information see:
Position code 1017, Salary: NOK 432 700 - 489 300 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority.

- Application letter, clearly stating which projects (1 – 3) you are applying for.
- CV (summarizing education, positions and academic work - scientific publications)
- Copies of educational certificates, transcript of records and letters of recommendation
- Documentation of English proficiency
- List of publications and academic work that the applicant wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee.
- Names and contact details of 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and telephone number)
