PhD position - FIB-modified 2D-nanomaterials for advanced multimodal bio-imaging

A PhD position is available at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. The appointment has a duration of 4 years including 1 year of duty work for NTNU NanoLab.

Job description
The position is within experimental nanotechnology, functional materials development and cross-disciplinary working. In the project, 2D boron nitride (BN) will be grown using different gas phase methods. The obtained 2D material will be nanostructured and functionalized using focused ion beam (FIB). Advanced techniques of characterization will be used to optimize the process. The modified BN will be evaluated as a multimodal contrast agent for simultaneous magnetic and photon based bio-imaging. The work will be based at NTNU NanoLab and at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

The successful candidate should transfer obtained competence to other users of the NanoLab (http://www.ntnu.no/nanolab) and others working in related fields within the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

We are looking for highly motivated and enthusiastic person to join our team. She/he should have good communication skills and be able to collaborate with other PhD candidates and international researchers.

The candidate must hold a Master degree or equivalent degree within Nanotechnology, Materials Science, Physics or a related field. Candidates who are currently finalizing their MSc degree can apply, but must have submitted their Master theses by 01.07.2017. Prior experience with modern charged particle optical systems (for example FIB, SEM), nanostructuring, gas phase synthesis technique (PVD and/or CVD), or the targeted application area is seen as advantageous. Candidates who have already held a PhD position should not apply for this position.

The regulations for PhD programs at NTNU state that the applicant must have a master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best). The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test.

The successful candidate should start the position no later than 1st September 2017.
