Postdoctoral position in Innate Immunity and Inflammation
Quick summary: The “Systems Inflammation Group” headed by Prof. Richard K. Kandasamy at the Centre for Molecular Inflammation Research (CEMIR) is looking for a Postdoctoral scientist who aspires to employ state-of-the-art cutting-edge technologies to systematically investigate the role of phosphorylation and kinases in innate immunity and inflammation.
About the project: The successful applicant will contribute to our current efforts on decoding the specific phosphorylation sites and kinases that regulate the activation of antiviral and inflammatory signaling. In our recent study (http://www.nature.com/articles/npjsba201627), we demonstrated that “phosphorylation appears to occupy a hierarchically dominant challenge-specific function and is tightly regulated.” In this project, we aim to dissect the temporal dynamics of proteome-wide phosphorylation changes during innate immune activation. Using an integrated approach employing orthogonal methods (such as high-resolution phosphoproteomics, CRISPR/Cas9 screens, etc.) and appropriate cell systems, we aim to functionally characterize novel phosphorylation sites and their kinases that play a key role in the activation/resolution of antiviral and inflammatory signaling.
The candidate will enjoy access to the excellent infrastructure and laboratory facilities at CEMIR and at the affiliated Department of Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine. The laboratories have state of the art cellular imaging instruments such as: a high-resolution STED confocal microscope, total internal reflection fluorescence microscope, live cell- and spinning disk confocal microscopes, image flow cytometer, cell sorter and also a confocal microscope installed in a biosafety level 3 facility. Moreover, CEMIR scientists have access to local core facilities in bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, imaging and research involving laboratory animals (http://www.ntnu.edu/dmf/core-facilities).
About the candidate:
- You should have a MD and must have a relevant PhD degree and have strong publication record with multiple first-author publications in international peer-reviewed journals.
- The candidate should be trained in molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry or immunology techniques.
- Excellent knowledge and understanding of inflammatory and antiviral signaling mechanisms.
- Experience with proteomics and/or NGS technologies will be a plus.
- The ideal candidate should:
- have an independent attitude
- have excellent communication skills
- be fluent in English
- have a strong motivation to work as members of a team.
The research group: Kandasamy’s research group focuses on how immune cells respond to infection and the regulatory circuits underlying inflammatory responses by combining classical and high-throughput methodologies. His interdisciplinary research group employs system-level approaches combining state-of-the-art technologies and computational methods to analyze and interpret this BIG-DATA to find critical gene products that govern this complex response. Kandasamy’s group is specifically interested in studying the role of 1) two major post-translational modifications – phosphorylation and ubiquitination; and 2) metabolic reprogramming; underlying antiviral signaling and inflammation. Kandasamy’s group offers a highly collaborative environment and has access to modern technologies through their own group, institute and international collaborators.
Kandasamy has been trained in internationally competitive bioinformatics, proteomics, systems biology and innate immunity laboratories from India, US and Austria. The group currently includes a Ph.D. student, a postdoc and a technical assistant. Kandasamy’s group is funded by a start-up package from the institute, Norway’s first ever tenure-track program Onsager Fellowship from NTNU and “Young Research Talent” grant from the Research Council of Norway.
Terms of employment:
Initially, the period of employment is 2 years, but this can be extended with two more years upon positive evaluation. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway.

Depending on qualifications and academic background, candidates will be remunerated on the Norwegian State salary scale, with gross salary from NOK 488 900 – NOK 515 600 a year, of which 2 % is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
