PhD position within Marine Structures (IV-83/17)

Description
A PhD position within the research project Wave Loads and Soil Support for Extra Large Monopiles (WAS-XL, NFR project 268182) is available at the Department of Marine Technology, NTNU, with affiliation to the centre of excellence AMOS. The research will be carried out at the Marine Technology Centre in cooperation with other researchers at NTNU, SINTEF Ocean, and NGI.  

 

As economies of scale push for larger (6-12MW) offshore wind turbines (OWT), larger support structures are needed. For shallow and intermediate water depths (The WAS-XL project proposes to develop 1) validated simplified models for strongly nonlinear irregular wave loads on large diameter monopiles in shallow or intermediate water depths, 2) realistic soil-structure modelling in experimental hydrodynamic testing, 3) verified engineering procedures to predict and quantify cyclic soil degradation combined with pore pressure dissipation during irregular cyclic loading and soil support at partially drained conditions, and 4) rational design methods to predict long-term behavior of the integrated system affecting the assessment of fatigue life time and evaluation of the applicability of methods for extreme value estimation.

 

The PhD candidate will be involved in several aspects of the project focusing on hydrodynamics and structural response, including both numerical and experimental work to be carried out at the Marine Technology Centre. Proposed tasks include numerical sensitivity studies for fatigue response, comparisons of different methods to estimate extreme responses, participation in designing, carrying out, and analyzing the results wave tank experiments with a fully-flexible monopile model, and validation of the numerical response predictions. Novel numerical and experimental methods will be considered.
 
Qualifications
Applicants must have an MSc (or equivalent) degree in marine technology, ocean engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or wind engineering, especially within disciplines such as structural dynamics and hydrodynamics, preferably with some experience regarding automatic control and wind turbine technology. Research or engineering experience in the offshore wind industry is considered an advantage. The successful candidate must also fulfill the requirements for admission to a doctoral program.


Conditions
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 432,300 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

 

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

 

The position is of 3 years’ duration, without teaching duties.
