PhD position - Energy efficient, integrated heat pump units for high performance buildings(IV-25/17

Description
A PhD scholarship is available at the Department of Energy and Process Engineering (EPT) within the Refrigeration research group on the topic of "Design and control of energy efficient, integrated vapour R744 compression systems for high performance buildings".

The Refrigeration research group has a well-established expertise and network as regards of vapour compression systems applying natural working fluids for various applications within different industrial sectors. In close cooperation with SINTEF the group is involved in several national and international research projects.

Norway is a Tourist Destination and has a large number of hotels all across the country. Hotels do have a complex energy distribution network and requirements. Heat recovery and integrated energy concepts are not widely applied, i.e. there is a huge potential to further reduce the specific primary energy demand (avoid fossil flues) for these kind of building. The development and implementation of vapour compression units would reduce the cost of ownership and the environmental footprint of the hotel sector significantly.

The purpose of the PhD work is to develop integrated energy systems for hotels located in Scandinavia and to establish new demonstration sites in Norway during the PhD period. Dynamic simulation tools will be applied to investigate and describe different concepts. Emphasis will be given to develop a Modelica based simulation tool taking into account various types of heat sources, types of energy distribution and thermal energy storage. Experimental verification and model validation will take place in dedicated hotels allied to ongoing research projects of the research team.

Qualifications
We seek a highly motivated candidate with a Master's degree (or equivalent) within refrigeration, applied mathematics or in energy engineering. Background knowledge in applying Modelica is an advantage. The candidate should present a strong interest for the modelling and simulation of complex multi-physical systems including heat and mass transfer. A prior and concrete experience with the aforementioned disciplines will be considered as an advantage. Excellent English and Norwegian skills, spoken and written are required. Applicants from non-English speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS, and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Conditions
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at gross NOK 430 200 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.

The appointment has a duration of 3 years. Depending on the candidate’s background and ability, the position can be extended to 4 years. If the position is for 4 years, one year is dedicated to duty work at the Department.
