Nord University offers education at bachelor, master and doctoral levels. Each year, new students are admitted to more than 180 study programmes within both professional and theoretical fields. Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA) is one of five faculties at the Nord University, and is represented at two of Nord’s campuses, Bodø and Steinkjer. FBA is responsible for research and education within animal sciences, aquaculture, ecology and genomics. Nord University’s strategy pints out blue and green growth as one of its three profiles and the faculty aspires to be the preferred partner in the High North within this part of the bio-economy.

In recent years, FBA has undergone major developments and projects financed by prestigious programmes like FRIPRO (The Research Council of Norway) and ERC Consolidator Grants (The European Research Council) are part of the faculty’s project portfolio.

The faculty has approximately 130 academic and technical/administrative employees, of which ca 30 % is recruited internationally. Twenty of the faculty’s employees are located at campus Steinkjer. The staff at Steinkjer are focusing on research and education within terrestrial ecology/natural resource management and animal sciences. The remaining are located in Bodø, focusing on aquaculture, animal science, genomics and marine ecology.

FBA has ca 840 students and offers eight bachelor’s degree programmes within biology, aquaculture, international marketing, animal sciences, veterinary nursing and natural resource management. The faculty also offers a master’s degree programme in Biology and Aquaculture, life-long learning courses and a doctoral degree programme in Aquatic Biosciences.

Professors/Associate Professors in Animal Sciences

Nord University, Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, is recruiting two professors to further strengthen the faculty’s research and education within animal sciences, welfare and production, currently offered at bachelor’s level. Both positions are located at Nord’s campus at Steinkjer.

The profile of the current bachelor study programme and the ongoing research of the present academic staff, are farm management and optimization of animal production. The faculty will consider developing a master’s programme within animal sciences. If such plans are realised, the new professors/associate professors will be expected to take a central part in developing and teaching the programme.

Requirements
We seek two professors/associate professors with substantial research experience in animal sciences. The successful candidates will hold a doctoral degree in animal sciences or veterinary medicine, or an equivalent accreditation or standing, and will meet the academic qualifications required for a professor/associate professor.

The candidate should have pedagogical skills and teaching experience in one or more of the subject areas: Anatomy and Physiology, Animal health and welfare, Animal nutrition or Feed production. The candidates may have to teach other subjects within animal sciences in the future.

For appointment as professor, the candidate should possess a good record of accomplishment of internationally recognized research within food animal sciences (dairy, beef, sheep, pig or poultry production) and farm management. Experience from grant procurement from national and international funding agencies is a requirement. For the assessment of candidates for full professor position, the selection committee will make use of the qualification descriptions for professor as they appear in the note: Coordination of the procedures for promotion to full professor at the science faculties of universities in Norway, adopted by the National Faculty Meeting of Sciences and National Council for Technological Education, August 2016.

For appointment to the position of associate professor, we require a Norwegian doctoral degree in relevant field, and experience in research within food animal sciences (see above) followed by peer-reviewed publications. Experience from national/international grant procurement is beneficial. If the candidate has a foreign degree, it has to be approved as equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree. Otherwise, the candidate needs qualifications at a similar level documented by scientific production of the same scope and quality.

For both positions, the successful candidate must be fluent in English as well as in Norwegian, Danish or Swedish language. If the candidate does not speak Norwegian at the time of appointment, he/she is obliged to take actions to master Norwegian/Danish/Swedish within three years. This is necessary as the study programme Bachelor in Animal Sciences - production and welfare is fully taught in Norwegian.

Professors/associate professors must have a basic formal pedagogical competence, and applicants that cannot yet document such competence, are requested to complete this within the first two years of employment. Nord University offers such training.

Personal Qualities
The faculty operates in close contact with the external bodies, which means that the successful candidate will work in close cooperation with financing bodies, researchers from other fields, departmental managers, farmers associations and farmers. Therefore the candidate should possess good communication skills, an including behaviour and team building qualifications.

FBA’s offer to the successful candidate
The successful candidate will be a member of a fast growing, successful faculty at Nord University involved in advanced research programmes. You will join the Animal Science, production and welfare group at FBA, consisting of members both in Bodø and in Steinkjer. The majority of the group members has an educational background in veterinary medicine, animal production or agriculture. You will be located in Steinkjer, and it is expected that you will work closely with your colleagues in Bodø. In Steinkjer, you will have access to good facilities for applied research in animal husbandry, and in Bodø, you will have access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities.

Salary and working conditions
The position is remunerated according to the Norwegian State Salary Scale, salary placement (Lpl.) 17.510, code 1013 Professor or code 1011 Associate Professor. Salary by agreement.

As an employee of Nord University, the successful candidate will be a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and will acquire access to other social benefits. A statutory payment to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted from the salary automatically. The successful candidate must comply with the laws, agreements and directives as they apply to the position at any given time. The responsibilities and duties linked to the position may be subject to change as a result of restructuring at Nord University.

Selection procedure
