Postdoctor - Numerical simulation of Taylor bubble regime in confined geometrics (IV-54/17)

A Post-doc position within the topic of numerical simulation of consecutive Taylor bubbles in confined geometries is available at the Fluid Mechanics research group, Department of Energy and Process Engineering, NTNU. This position will be part of a larger on-going project dealing with flow boiling in micro-channels.

Flow boiling is an efficient heat transfer mechanism often encountered in miniaturized process equipment such as micro- and mini-heat exchangers and micro-reactors, where the Taylor bubble regime is among the most common regimes encountered in such geometries. The development of two-phase micro-channel technology requires a thorough understanding of the hydrodynamic and thermal behaviour of two-phase flow in such confined geometries.

The focus of this project is on the understanding of the underlying physical phenomena by means of advanced numerical techniques. The Post-doc candidate will work on the numerical study of bubble dynamics during Taylor bubble regime inside small diameter channels. The candidate will be responsible for improving and further developing an existing numerical simulation tool based on spectral methods and the diffuse interface approach for describing interface dynamics. For the simulations, special attention will be given to the dynamics between two consecutive bubbles, and how these affect the heat transfer process. There will be a close cooperation with an already ongoing PhD candidate working under the same project. The candidate will also have a close cooperation with the other students in the group working on similar topics.

The Post-doc position is for a period of 2 years, starting during 2017 as early as possible. The candidate is expected to hold, or be in the final stages of completing a PhD degree within a relevant discipline, with good experience in numerical methods and numerical simulations of fluid flow. The candidate should demonstrate good background in fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer and possibly applied mathematical modelling, with specialization in numerical methods and scientific computing. Programming skills with MATLAB are required, while basic knowledge of C++ will be considered advantageous for this position. Knowledge in finite element method and/or spectral methods is also a requisite. Experience with parallel computing will be beneficial. General engineering CFD experience based on commercial software will not be sufficient.

Terms of employment

The appointment of the Postdoctoral fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees.


Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, with a minimum of gross NOK 485 700 per annum (before tax). There will be a 2% deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.
