The Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (http://www.ntnu.edu/ie) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for two 100% positions as postdoctoral fellows within Machine Learning at the Department of Computer Science (IDI) (http://www.ntnu.edu/idi).


The appointment is for a term of up to three years. The position of post-doctoral fellow is a fixed-term position with the primary objective of qualifying for work in top academic posts. The selected postdoctoral fellow will also assist in PhD student supervision and a significant contribution in project applications for external funds is expected. The position represents an excellent opportunity for an individual to develop his/her career and contribute to the further development of the collaboration.


Information about the department


The Department of Computer Science currently has 28 full time professors, 58 associate professors, 19 adjunct professors, 33 postdocs/researchers, 65 PhD students, and 22 technical/administrative staff. The department has had research and educational programs in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning since the early nineties, with a strengthening in personnel resources as well as student interest over the last years. There is also research related to Machine Learning and Big Data analysis within other departments of the faculty, as well as applications of methods within NTNU more generally.


The department’s research in Machine Learning contributes to the state-of-the-art of individual methods and algorithms as well as combinations of methods targeting particular tasks. For example, combining data-intensive methods with knowledge-based methods to produce user explanations for decision support. Thus far, our strongest contributions to the international research front have been within Bayesian learning and probabilistic reasoning, evolutionary learning and neural networks, and instance-based learning and case-based reasoning. In addition, we have ongoing activities at a high international level within large-scale data and information management. Over the last years there has been an increased interest in combined methods, e.g. integrating probabilistic and instance-based learning methods, or combining deep neural networks with reinforcement learning, applied to large volumes of data.


The Telenor-NTNU AI-Lab


The Telenor-NTNU AI-Lab is a joint lab for research in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Big Data Analytics. The lab was established in 2016, and will be operative from January 1st, 2017. It is hosted by the Department of Computer Science. The lab will conduct fundamental ML research, including theory and method development, as well as application-oriented research at a high international level. Lab facilities will also be available for other research groups within the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering doing ML research, for NTNU more generally, and for external cooperating partners.


The postdoc positions will be dedicated to the AI-Lab. In addition, we plan to hire one full professor and two PhD fellows who will be directly connected to the lab.


Job description

The postdoc researchers will be a member of the Telenor-NTNU AI-Lab project team.

More specifically, the researcher will participate in relevant research activities connected to the lab. For this reason, successful candidates are expected to perform excellent research within AI, Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, or related areas.


We primarily seek candidates who have a PhD in ICT, with specialisation related to the above-mentioned areas.

Besides personal qualities and the ability to work in team, we will prioritise candidates based on the following criteria:

  • Strong publication record, with publications in top-level conferences and journals

  • Excellent communication skills - written and oral

  • Ability to work independently and in team


Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).


Minimum scores are:


  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)

  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)

  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A


Salary conditions


The position of Post doctor is placed within code 1352 in the Norwegian State salary scale.

Starting salary expected to be at minimum level 57; NOK 485,700 depending on qualifications. 2% of the salary will be deducted as an obligatory premium to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
