The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MH) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) announces a permanent position as Professor /Associated Professor in Medicine (Global Health). This is a full time position, funded by The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

We are searching for candidates working in the Faculty's defined priority areas and fields where the Faculty has already established activities linked to global health. Global health research, is defined as research that can help provide lasting improvements in health and reduce health inequalities for poor people in low and middle income countries. Ongoing activities include research, teaching and innovation, with a focus on women's and children's health, infection and health technology. The Faculty's priority areas in terms of research strategy are medical technology, health surveys & biobanking, and translational research (see: http://www.ntnu.edu/mh)

Description of the subject area and responsibilities for this position
Together with the department’s other academic staff, the person holding the post is responsible for teaching and research in the discipline of global health. This includes the person's own research, and supervision of students in the discipline. The person holding the post is also obliged to take part in administrative duties.


Specific requirements and responsibilities

The appointee to the position will be responsible for the academic aspects of established projects within global health and developing further international collaboration.

The appointee shall also promote the interests of the global health research area in collaboration with the local hospitals in the region, SINTEF, and other faculties at the University.

The appointee will have responsibility for coordinating activities and collaborations in global health at the faculty, and to contribute in the application processes for external research funding.


For appointment as a professor, an academic level conforming to established international or national standards is required. Further requirements are documentation of practical teaching competence based on education or on teaching and supervision, documentation of dissemination of knowledge and research, and documentation of education and experience in administration and management.


A requirement for appointment as an associate professor is a doctoral degree in the subject area concerned or competence at a corresponding level documented by academic work of the same scope and quality. A further requirement is documentation of relevant practical competence in teaching based on education or on teaching and supervision.


Applicants who are not qualified for a professorship may be appointed to the post of associate professor. In accordance with the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts of 9 February 2006, issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, a person who is appointed as an associate professor may apply for personal promotion to a professorship.


The successful applicant must be able to document extensive professional and clinical qualifications as well as scientific expertise in one or more aspects of the discipline for which this post is responsible.


The ability to initiate and lead research and teaching will be emphasized, in addition to teaching and supervision at PhD level. Importance will also be attached to teaching skills. The evaluation will be based on documented material related to teaching, including qualifications in educational theory and practice, presentation skills in academic work, teaching experience, and other pedagogical background. Quality and breadth will be evaluated. Emphasis will also be placed on personal aptitude.


The candidate’s personal aptitude and motivation for the position will be an important part of the assessment of the candidate


It is essential that the person appointed has good collaborative skills, leadership experience and the ability to work across traditional academic boundaries. The appointee must also be able to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds. Emphasis will be put to documented established networks of contacts in relevant parts of the world.


Specific qualification requirements

To be eligible for this position, applicants must have:

- a Cand. Med. degree (equivalent to an MBBS or MD) or other relevant higher education).

- It is preferable that the appointee has clinical qualifications in a relevant field or Global Health experience such as working in international aid organizations, NGO etc.


General information about the post

The person holding the post is obliged to participate in implementation of the teaching programme according to the curricula in effect and in further development of the subject areas and teaching programmes, including continuing and further education.


The person holding the post must help to ensure that students develop a global perspective on health and knowledge about global health challenges in their own subject area, and must contribute to cooperation focused on global health challenges in both research and education.


The clinical programme in medicine at NTNU is based on an integrated academic model in which preclinical, paraclinical and clinical disciplines are coordinated from the first academic year. Teaching takes place partly in small groups centred on patient descriptions, and partly as lectures, seminars, laboratory exercises and practice in the skills laboratory. Much of the teaching is in the form of problem-based learning in student groups with university staff as tutors. The person holding the post is obliged to participate as a tutor in such groups.


The person appointed must comply with the decisions about changes due to developments in the subject area, and the organizational changes resulting from decisions regarding the university's activities.


The appointment is subject to the conditions in effect at any time for employees in the public sector.

  • Depending on qualifications and academic background, Professors (in code 1013) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will be remunerated at a minimum of NOK 609 300 per year before tax. Normal wage level is NOK 609 300 – 789 700 of which 2 % is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. Depending on qualifications and academic background, Associated Professors (in code 1011) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will be remunerated at a minimum of NOK 488 900 per year before tax. Normal wage level is NOK 488 900 -621 400 of which 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Within three years of appointment, new employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language must demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to Level 3 in the course in Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the University.
