A temporary 3 year, 100 % (full-time) PhD position is open for an outstanding candidate to investigate the function of neural circuits in health and disease. The candidate is expected to start in June 2017. Applicants completing their master in Spring 2017 are invited to apply.
Institute and lab:
The research project will take place at the world-renowned Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, in Trondheim, Norway. The Kavli Institute is directed by Prof. May-Britt Moser and Prof. Edvard Moser, Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine in 2014. The position is available in the Yaksi group, which is an international team of enthusiastic biologists, physicists and engineers. Our main scientific goal is to understand the fundamental principles underlying the development and function of neural circuits in health and disease. We use the zebrafish as a genetically tractable vertebrate model organism. We monitor, dissect, and perturb the neural circuits in vivo, through a unique combination of behavioral assays, calcium imaging, electrophysiology, and optogenetics. We are searching for a highly motivated PhD student whose main goal will be to investigate the behavioral and neural changes induced by chronic stress in zebrafish. The project will involve state of-the-art, technically demanding experimental work including behavioral assays, neuroanatomical tracing, in vivo 2-photon and confocal imaging as well as optogenetic perturbation of genetically tagged neuronal subsets.
- Master’s degree in Neurobiology or scientific areas relevant for Systems Neuroscience, with an average grade of B or higher (A to E grading system; A highest)
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Excellent communication skills, oral and written
- Strong motivation for the position, and proven ability to work independently as well as in a scientific team
Emphasis will be placed on:
- Prior research experience and/or publication. Documented experience with laboratory animals, statistical analysis, behavioral assays, microscopy, or programming skills will be an advantage.

Depending on qualifications and academic background, PhD Candidates (in code 1017) at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will be remunerated at a minimum of NOK 435 100 per year before tax. Normal wage level is NOK 435 100 - 497 600 of which 2% is deducted for the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations and supplementary rules with guidelines for employment as PhD Candidate appointments at universities and university colleges.
