Postdoc in Ice-induced Vibrations of Offshore Wind Turbines (IV-17/17)

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering provides competence and technological solutions within the areas of civil and transportation engineering, structural engineering, water and wastewater engineering, and hydraulic engineering. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is announcing a postdoctoral position for an employment period of minimum two years. Ice-induced vibrations of offshore wind turbines is a threat to most bottom-founded structures in ice-infested waters. Even a relatively thin ice, such as often observed in the Baltic sea, can cause long-lasting vibrations of such flexible structures as wind turbines. As the Baltic Sea will host a significant number of wind parks in the future, the ice-induced vibrations must be accounted for in the design of those parks, especially when the design is driven by the fatigue considerations. Existing standards and engineering models do not allow for a reliable prediction of the ice-induced vibrations. Therefore, a further development of the models for prediction of ice-induced vibrations is required as well as a verification of their predictions using full-scale data.


This post-doctoral study will focus on identification of the on-set conditions for ice-induced vibrations by means of analysis of available full-scale data. A modelling effort is also envisaged with the focus on the effect of ice flexure and floe size on the development of the ice-induced vibrations. As a result of the study, a predictive tool currently being developed under the auspices of SAMCOT- an excellence centre for Sustainable Arctic Marine and Coastal Technology - will be augmented and verified against the full-scale measurements.




Applicants should have a PhD degree within Arctic Engineering, Structural Dynamics, Applied Physics, Data Analysis or a similar area. The positions require spoken and written fluency in the English language.

Conditions of appointment


Postdoctoral candidates are remunerated in code 1352, minimum gross amount NOK 485,700 per annum (before tax). There will be a 2 % deduction to The Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross salary.

Engagement is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The position adheres to the Norwegian Government’s policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. Women are encouraged to apply.
