PhD position in Advance Structural and Electrical Optimization of Composite Materials IV-40/17

A PhD position is available at the NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Industrial and Mechanical Engineering. The appointment has a duration of 3 years.


Description
The use of Finite Element Analysis in product design is common across multiple industries including automotive, aerospace and consumer electronics. However, with the advent of novel production technologies such as additive manufacturing, new opportunities emerge in product design that cannot be utilized in nowadays design tools. The theme of this PhD is to develop a simulation method for structural optimization of fatigue designs in fibre reinforced composites while tuning their electrical properties. Multiphysics and multiscale simulation will be essential. Utilizing novel and advanced nanoscale prototyping technologies the calculated designs shall be realised in novel smart products.


Qualifications
The applicant must have an MSc (or equivalent) in industrial or mechanical engineering and a documented background in the finite element simulation and structural optimization of glass/epoxy laminates. The candidate shall have at least 1 paper published in an international journal on the same or similar topics. Good knowledge in Ansys Mechanical APDL and Matlab as well as good oral and written English skills are prerequisites.

 

The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams. Proficiency to systematically carry out goal-oriented work, in combination with good skills to deliver oral and written presentation of research results, along with good collaborative capabilities will be emphasized. Excellent English skills—written and oral—are required.

 

The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required. Conditions of appointment
PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated with gross salary NOK 432 300 before tax. There will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage. As a member of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund you are offered:

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with “Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident”, given by the Ministry of Education and Research of 19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement.
