NTNU - knowledge for a better world

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) creates knowledge for a better world and solutions that can change everyday life.

PhD in concrete structures (IV-37/17)

Faculty of Engineering Science (IV)

Department of Structural Engineering

PhD-position on concrete structures

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Department of Structural Engineering in Trondheim offers a PhD position in the field of concrete structures. The position is for 3 years without duties or 4 years with 25 % duties.

The PhD position requires a Master’s degree or equivalent in structural engineering.

The focus in the project is on use of the finite element method in design of concrete structures. In design codes, e.g. Eurocode 2, the design of linear members like beams and columns are well defined. However, current requirements are often based on test results from relatively small specimens, and not verified for large scale structures. Size effects in concrete, reinforcement layouts and basic assumptions made in the design are issues which must be considered in the work.

The goal in the project is to improve the design basis for large scale reinforced concrete structures. Typical structures to analyse are large infrastructures, dams and offshore structures. The validity of today’s methods to design for the combination of membrane and bending action in slab and shell structures will also be an important part of the project.

The department is involved in the project “Coastal Highway Route E39” run by the Norwegian Public Road Administration, see www.vegvesen.no/Vegprosjekter/ferjefriE39/English. To develop a route with no ferry connections, large fjord-crossings require large scale concrete structures. The results from this PhD study will be of great asset to this project.

The successful applicants are motivated and ambitious students with excellent grades and have background in structural mechanics, programming and design of concrete structures. The PhD applicants are expected to carry out theoretical development and experimental work.

Written and oral abilities: the applicant should be fluent in English (spoken and written), familiar with giving presentations and lectures in English and also interested in learning Norwegian.

PhD Candidates are remunerated according to code 1017, and are normally remunerated at wage at gross NOK 432 300 before tax. The salary is adjusted according to the latest wage negotiations. There is a 2 % deduction for superannuation. The engagement will be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The position adheres to the Norwegian Government's policy of balanced ethnicity, age and gender. According to the new Freedom of Information Act, information concerning the applicant may be made public even if the applicant has requested not to be included in the list of applicants.

Applications with a cover letter, CV, any publications and other scientific works, certified copies of transcripts and reference letters should be submitted electronically to www.jobbnorge.no

Additionally, a list of reference persons (at least one) must be submitted. This could be a previous project leader, university professor or any other supervisor you have worked with. Be aware that a reference check will be conducted.

Any other document you consider relevant may be submitted.

Candidates from universities outside Norway are requested to send a Diploma Supplement or a similar document, which describes in detail the study, grade systems and the right to further studies associated with the obtained degree, according to: http://ec.europa.eu/education/resources/diploma-supplement_en
