Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies

The University of Bergen (UiB) is an internationally recognised research university with more than 14,000 students and close to 3,500 employees at six faculties. The university is located in the heart of Bergen. Our main contribution to society is excellent basic research and education across a wide range of disciplines.

Postdoktor

Applications are invited for the three year postdoctoral research fellow position at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies to begin 1st April 2019. The position is associated with the project “Transformations of Medieval Law: Innovation and Application in Early Modern Norwegian Law Books”. The project is financed by Bergen Research Foundation and the University of Bergen.

About the postdoctoral project/work tasks

The overall project “Transformations of Medieval Law” investigates the transformations of the Norwegian Law-Code of 1274, the Landslov.

The postdoctoral project must investigate the amendments to the Landslov and address the following question:

  • How and why was the Landslov transformed from a medieval law to reflect the needs of an Early Modern society, and how is this reflected in the manuscripts?

Furthermore, two subquestions must be taken into account when developing the postdoctoral project proposal:

  • What parts of the law were amended and why?
  • How and why were amendments incorporated into manuscripts?

The methodological approach should be based in material philology.

The postdoctoral position should also contribute to the project’s overall development. The holder of the fellowship will be expected to check some manuscript transcriptions, contribute towards a database of manuscripts of interest to the project, assist in organising conferences, and engage with public outreach and social media as part of the project. The applicant should be willing to learn some Norwegian if they have no prior experience of a modern Scandinavian language. Applicants ought to contact helen.leslie@uib.no for a copy of the project description.

Qualifications and personal qualities

The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD in a subject relevant to the project (e.g. Old Norse, law or history), or an equivalent foreign degree. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded before 1 April 2019.

Special requirements

Familiarity with codicology and palaeography is essential. Knowledge of Old Norse and a good command of written and spoken English are required. Knowledge of Latin is an advantage, as is previous experience with legal studies or medieval/Early Modern Norwegian law.

The candidate should be independent and motivated, work in a structured manner, be collegial and willing to contribute to joint research (such as joint research papers and presentations).
