PhD position in computer science: parameterized complexity applications in visualization

There is vacancy for a PhD position in computer science at the Department of Informatics. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year, associated with the project “Parameterized Complexity for Practical Computing” financed by the Research Council of Norway through the ToppForsk program.

 

Information and communication technology plays a crucial role in fundamental changes in today’s society. As a consequence, there is an increasing need for computer scientists, and A PhD degree in computer science is highly requested by corporate organizations and academia.

 

About the Department

The Department of informatics has seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, and visualization. All the groups are successfully co-funded by research grants, among others by the European Research Council (ERC). The department has been rated first in Norway with respect to quality of science by the Research Council of Norway in all external evaluations so far. All employees are expected to contribute to excellence through high quality research. The department offers state of art education at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

 

About the project/work tasks

A person who receives the announced position will work towards receiving a PhD degree in the intersection of the research fields algorithms and visualization within the end of the period. The project concentrates on practical applications of parameterized complexity and parameterized algorithms, and for this position the applications will be in visualization. The successful candidate to receive the position will work under the guidance of professors Helwig Hauser and Michael Fellows.

 

Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in computer science, informatics.

  • Applicants must have a solid background in algorithms or visualization, preferably both.

  • Applicants must have good programming skills.

  • Applicants must be interested in research and development, and be curious and motivated.

  • Experience from teaching, for example as a teaching assistant, is an advantage.

  • A good command of the Norwegian language is an advantage.

  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and demonstrate good collaborative skills.

  • Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

About the PhD position

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year. A person who is hired for four years will, in addition to working towards a PhD degree, contribute to teaching, outreach and recruitment, as 25% of their time. The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department, and will be decided upon appointment. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

 

About the research training

As a PhD candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have commenced in the position. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
