PhD position (4) in computer science

There is vacancy for four PhD positions in computer science at the Department of Informatics. The positions are for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year. A PhD degree in computer science is highly requested by corporate organizations and academia.


About the Department

The Department of informatics has seven research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, and visualization. All the groups are successfully co-funded by research grants, among others by the European Research Council (ERC). The department has been rated first in Norway with respect to quality of science by the Research Council of Norway in all external evaluations so far. All employees are expected to contribute to excellence through high quality research. The department offers state of art education at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.


About the project/work tasks

A person who receives one of the announced positions will work towards receiving a PhD degree in one of the seven research directions mentioned above within the end of the period. A person who is hired for four years will, in addition, contribute to teaching, outreach and recruitment, as 25% of their time.


We are seeking excellent candidates within each of the seven research directions of our department. We are currently expanding in the following areas, and applicants in these directions are therefore of particular interest:

  • Machine learning
  • Industrial optimization / operations research

  • First order logic

  • Robust and secure software through type theory and formal proofs of correctness

  Qualifications and personal qualities

  • Applicants must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in computer science, informatics, mathematics or a related field. Master students can apply provided they complete their final master exam before 15.02.2019. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • Applicants must have background from at least one of the fields algorithms, bioinformatics, machine learning, optimization, visualization, security, and programming theory. Applicants with background from machine learning, programming theory (logic and reliable software), and optimization will have priority.

  • Applicants must be interested in research and development, as well as curious and motivated.

  • Experience from teaching, for example as a teaching assistant, is an advantage.

  • A good command of the Norwegian language is an advantage.

  • Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral English.

  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and demonstrate good collaborative skills.

  • Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

About the PhD position

The fellowship will be for a period of 3 years, with the possibility for a 4th year, consisting of 25 % work related to teaching, recruitment or dissemination, distributed across the employment period. The 4th year is contingent on the qualifications of the candidate and the teaching needs of the department, and will be decided upon appointment. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a qualifying post (e.g. research fellow, research assistant).

About the research training

As a PhD candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have commenced in the position. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.

  • a list of any works of a scientific nature (publication list)
  • any publications in your name
