The Faculty of Social Sciences offers study programs at the bachelor, master and doctoral levels. The programs are varied and include Economics, Business Administration, Law, Tourism, Media, Sociology, Social Work, Childcare, Nursing, Change Management, Arts and Culture and Societal Safety. The study programs are based on a combination of theoretical and practical knowledge, on interdisciplinarity and collaboration with public and private sector. New knowledge is generated from both practical experience and systematic research, or a combination of these two.

The Faculty of Social Sciences has ca. 2,200 students and 160 employees. It consists of Department of Media and Social Sciences, Department of Social Studies, the Norwegian School of Hotel Management, and Network for Gender Studies (NFK). NFK offers courses (BA/MA level) to an increasing number of students and is committed to the production of research that meets international standards. Currently, NFK employs 3 senior researchers and a PhD student, and it coordinates an interdisciplinary platform for UiS researchers who are interested in gender studies and feminist theory.

Postdoctoral Fellow in Gender Studies

The University of Stavanger invites applications for a position as Postdoctoral Fellow at Network for Gender Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences. The appointment is for two years with research obligations only but may be extended to three years with research as well as obligations related to teaching and supervision (33%). The position is vacant from 1 June 2019.

The research area for the position is gender studies with a focus on racism.

In recent years, critical perspectives on racialization and structural racism have gained more prominence in the Nordic public spheres. Although this tendency also applies to the academic field of Nordic gender studies, the research focus on racism remains limited. This postdoctoral research project aims to address this shortage, by expanding and qualifying this dimension of knowledge production within the field of gender studies. Projects that pay particular attention to Nordic racism or racism in the Nordic regions are therefore prioritized.

The principal objective of the position is to strengthen the research area, and to give scholars holding a doctoral degree within relevant academic field(s) the opportunity for further qualification toward tenured positions. The applicant must submit a project proposal and project plan. The candidate is required to clarify in what way the project will add to the applicant’s competences.

The appointee must hold a PhD in gender studies or another relevant discipline. The doctoral degree must not be older than four years at the application deadline. It is a requirement that the doctoral dissertation has been submitted for evaluation before the deadline for applications, and that the PhD has been defended before starting the position as postdoctoral fellow.

The application must include:

  • A cover letter that outlines the applicant’s motivation.
  • A project proposal in English (max 5 pages including bibliography). The proposal must as a minimum account for research questions and relevance of the project, theoretical framework, methodological reflections, and a description of expected output and contributions.
  • CV and a list of publications.
  • Scientific publications (max 4, including the full doctoral dissertation).
  • Copies of exam diplomas and relevant certificates, letters of recommendations (max 2) and documentation that the doctoral dissertation has been submitted for evaluation and/or obtained.

Assessment criteria:

  • PhD level qualifications in gender studies, research on racism, or other relevant fields of research
  • The scientific quality of the project proposal (relevance, feasibility, originality)
  • Analytical, methodological and theoretical competences
  • Skills to work independently and as a team member
  • Plan for research dissemination
  • Written and oral proficiency in English

In addition to an evaluation of their submitted project plan and scientific work, potential candidates will be invited to an interview.

Qualifications within the areas of creativity, innovation and commercialization of research will be given emphasis in appointments to academic positions at the University of Stavanger. The research project will be carried out at the university. It is required that the appointee will work full time on the project and that the appointee will participate in and contribute to the research community at the Network for Gender Studies and the university in general.

Regarding an employment period of three years, teaching and supervision obligations are included. During the first year, the postdoctoral fellow will participate in “NyTi”; which is the university’s guidance and integration program for new teachers.

The salary is set according to the State Salary Code, l.pl 17.510, code 1352, NOK 520.000 - 650.000 per annum. In special cases, a higher salary may be considered. The position provides an automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, which guarantees favorable retirement benefits.
