Up to five PhD Research Fellowships

At the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion there are up to five PhD fellowships available from 1 January 2019.

Qualification requirements

Applicants must meet the formal requirements for admission to the PhD program at the University of Bergen. The University requires the equivalent of a master’s degree (i.e. 3 years bachelor and 2 years master). That entails that the applicant must have an education with a scope of 300 ECTS credits, of which the Master's program comprises 120 ECTS credits and includes independent work of between 30 and 60 ECTS credits. Applicants must have completed their master’s degree at the time of application.

Applications may be in any of the department’s subject areas:
 

  • Archaeology

  • History

  • Cultural Studies (Ethnology/Folklore)

  • Religion

The project proposal should fall within one of the four subject areas and will be considered with reference to existing research milieus and available competence within the department. The candidate's main supervisor will normally come from the permanent academic staff of the department. The proposed supervisor must have confirmed his or her willingness to supervise the project, and the name of the supervisor must be stated in the application.

Salary


The salary will be in accordance with level 51 (code 1017/20.9) on the state salary scale, currently NOK 449.000 gross p.a., following ordinary meriting regulations.

A compulsory 2 % contribution to the State Pension Fund (Statens pensjonskasse) will be deducted from gross salary.

About the research training:

 

The Fellowships` main goal is to lead to a PhD degree, which qualifies for independent research activities, and for other work that requires particular competence.

The successful PhD Candidate, will be enrolled at the PhD program at UiB which entails an educational program/research training. It is a condition that the candidate satisfies the enrolment requirements for the PhD program at the University of Bergen.

About the positions

The research fellow must take part in the University´s approved PhD program. The fellowships’ main goal is to lead to a PhD degree, which qualifies for independent research activities, and for other work that requires similar qualifications. The employment period may be reduced if the selected candidate previously has been employed in a recruitment position. Applicants who has previously held a PhD-position at UiB cannot apply.

The fellowships are awarded for a period of four years, provided progress is satisfactory. Of these, three years is set aside for the research project and PhD education, while the last is allocated to teaching and other obligations done for the department. An agreement concerning the work load must be made with the department at the time of employment.

The successful applicants will be expected to relocate to the University of Bergen and conform to the regulations that apply to the positions.

  6. Name and contact information of three referees. One of the referees must be the main supervisor of your master’s thesis or an equivalent thesis.

  7. A conformation letter from your main supervisor at the Department of Archaeology, History, Cultural Studies and Religion

The documents may be in Word or pdf-format. Copies of higher education certificates and diplomas must be accompanied by a translation into English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish if not written in any of these languages. Translations of diplomas must be received by the department within the application deadline, as must any academic publications submitted.
