Postdoctoral fellowship in Comparative Literature

Applications are invited for a four-year postdoctoral fellowship in Comparative Literature at the Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies, from 1 August 2018. The position is associated with the research group for Radical Philosophy and Literature (RFL) and the project “Forms of Violence. Aesthetics and Politics in Times of Terror.”

About the project/work tasks

The project investigates aesthetic aspects of today’s “paradigm of violence” from a historical, geographical and gendered perspective. The postdoctoral project must be linked to one or more of these dimensions, emphasizing the relationship between aesthetics, politics and change. The postdoctoral position should also contribute to the development of the project’s overall theoretical perspectives. Qualifications and personal qualities:

Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or equivalent foreign degree, or must have submitted the doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded before appointment can take place.

Special requirements:

The applicant must be able to document solid theoretical training. It is an advantage, but not an absolute requirement, that the applicant has knowledge of radical philosophy in the tradition from Marx, Freud and Nietzsche, with special regard to the relation between aesthetics and (radical) change, aesthetics, and ideology, or to aesthetics and affective affects (e.g., Deleuze, Badiou, Spivak, Rancière, Butler, Žižek). It is also an advantage if the applicant has previously worked with problems similar to those addressed by the “Forms of Violence” project (violence, aesthetics, politics), either separately or in combination.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The successful applicant shall prepare a plan for qualifying for top academic positions in cooperation with the head of Department. The applicants must submit a proposal for this qualification plan.

It is a premise that the successful applicant will complete the project within the stipulated period of employment.

The fixed-term period for this position is 4 years. 1 year of this period (25% of the position) is designated for duties such as teaching/supervision and administration. Duties will be allocated over the four year period and an agreement concerning the actual work load will be made with the department at the time of employment.

Candidates cannot be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution.

The postdoctoral position demands that the successful candidate has his or her regular workplace at the University of Bergen, Department of Linguistic, Literary and Aesthetic Studies and comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at all times.
