Modern meteorology requires management and analysis of enormous amounts of data, and offers great and exciting professional challenges. Researcher/Scientific Programmer

The Norwegian Meteorological Institute has one or two open positions for Researchers/Scientific programmers. The positions are affiliated with the Ocean and Ice Division, Research and Development Department in Oslo. The Ocean and Ice Division develops and operates numerical models for forecasting of ocean currents, hydrography, sea level, waves and sea-ice. These models provide input to downstream services such at oil spill drift models and search-and-rescue support. The work is carried out in collaboration with national and international partners and is largely funded externally.

The work is primarily related to the operation, development and maintenance of the operational Arctic ocean model for the Copernicus Arctic Marine Forecasting Center (ARC-MFC). In ARC-MFC, MET Norway, the Nansen Center and the Institute for Marine Research have the responsibility for Arctic monitoring and forecasting as part of the European Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service. The Arctic ocean model provides boundary conditions to higher resolution regional modeling systems that provide detail on the continental shelf and along the coast.

You will be part of the ARC-MFC team and will work on the operationalization of model upgrades and on new development within the ARC-MFC model system. In addition, you will collaborate closely with the developers of the regional modeling systems, in particular with regard to downscaling to, and evaluation of, ensemble prediction systems based on the regional setups. The work requires good technical and scientific skills. It also requires the ability to work within an inter-institutional collaboration, and it is essential that you can work efficiently in a team environment.


The positions are for two years, but with the possibility of an extension.



  • higher education in geophysics, applied mathematics or equivalent
  • experience in numerical ocean circulation modeling (experience with HYCOM is beneficial)
  • experience and proven knowledge in applied mathematical/scientific programming within the Linux environment
  • experience in software development in Fortran
  • experience with the Python scripting language
  • experience with software version control (e.g. git)
  • experience with Drupal is beneficial
  • experience with operational systems and high performance computing
  • ability to work in a team environment
  • proficient in English
  • fluent in Norwegian, or willingness to learn Norwegian

Working conditions

  • salary as scientist on the governmental salary scales dependent on qualifications and experience
  • membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension
  • the probationary period is six months
