Temporary part-time position as Adjunct Associate Professor at the Medical Student Research Programme at the Faculty of Medicine

At the University of Bergen, Faculty of Medicine, there is vacant a temporary part-time position as adjunct associate professor (20 %) connected to the Medical Student Research Programme for students of medicine and dentistry for a period of five (5) years. The position will be affiliated with the department that best fits the successful candidate’s research profile. Applicants must hold a permanent relevant main position at an external institution. 

 

Medical students (17 in total) and dentistry students (2 in total) who are interested in medical research and would like to pursue a future career in research can apply for the Medical Student Research Programme.

 

Students admitted to the Medical Student Research Programme receive organised researcher training in addition to participating in the ordinary medical degree programme.  They carry out their own research and write a research paper that can be the start of a doctoral thesis.

Salary

For an adjunct associate professor the initial salary pay grade is 59-62 (code 8028/pay framework 24.3-24.6) on the government salary scale; at present NOK 508 800 - 537 700 gross p.a. for a full time position; following ordinary meriting regulations. In case of particularly highly qualified applicants a higher salary may be considered.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have a relevant doctorate or corresponding qualifications within the field of medicine or dentistry. Documented scholarly competence in accordance with the qualifications for academic positions at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry will be required.

 

The successful candidate must have a basic education in medicine or dentistry. Experience within the management of research projects, the supervision of research recruits, the coordination of research activity and experience from research strategic work will be stressed in the evaluation process. Proven willingness and ability to cooperate will also be emphasized.

 

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian.

 

Guidelines

The successful applicant will be required to take part in teaching- and examination programmes in force at any time and to comply without additional remuneration with any amendments that may be introduced by legislation with regard to curriculum, pension schemes and retirement age.

Description of position

The successful candidate and the head of the Medical Student Research Programme will be responsible for the administration, supervision and teaching of students that are enrolled in the programme, in addition to handling exam-related work, planning and executing other activities connected to the Medical Student Research Programme. 


The position demands motivation and enthusiasm for the recruitment of researchers, the ability to follow up and supervise students, in addition to an interest in work connected to the development of study programs. Knowledge of and interest in the researcher training program at the Faculty, different research environments and different research methods will be useful for succeeding in the position. 


The successful candidate will be responsible for different research training activities, courses, evaluation work and planning in connection with the programme description.


Although not an absolute requirement, it is preferable that the successful candidate is capable of supervising participants in the Medical Student Research Programme. The successful candidate should be able to continue his/her research, affiliated with the academic environment and department that is desirable and most appropriate.


The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or one of the other Scandinavian languages within two years of his/her appointment.

 

Reference is made to the University's General Regulations which state that as part of the normal duties connected to the position, the successful applicant may also be required to undertake teaching, supervision and work in connection with examinations in his or her particular field outside the organisational unit that the position falls under.

 

The University of Bergen emphasises that teaching qualifications are to be given extra emphasis in appointments to middle and top academic positions. Applicants must produce evidence of their own teaching qualifications. This may be done by submitting, for instance:

  • evidence of completed teaching training
  • evaluation reports of the applicant's teaching
  • overview of scope and level of teaching
  • overview of supervision of post-graduate and doctoral candidates, and results obtained
  • student awards received
  • own teaching publications
  • own teaching compendia and material reports showing participation in projects related to the development of teaching, such as alternative forms of teaching, supervision or teaching environments.

Appointment takes place based on the recommendation of an expert committee and an independent assessment from the appointing authority including the interview and any testing of teaching competence.
