Postdoctoral Fellow position at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral fellow in oceanography at the Geophysical Institute, University of Bergen. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years, and is associated with the externally funded EU project INTAROS “Integrated Arctic observation system”.

About the project and the work tasks

The overall objective of INTAROS is to develop an integrated Arctic Observation System by extending, improving and unifying existing systems in the different regions of the Arctic. INTAROS is an ambitious EU project undertaken by institutions in Europe, North America and Asia running until 2021. INTAROS has a strong multidisciplinary focus, with tools for integrating data from the atmosphere, ocean, cryosphere and terrestrial sciences. Further details about the project here: http://www.intaros.eu/

An integrated Arctic Observation System will enable better-informed decisions and better-documented processes within key sectors like shipping, tourism and fisheries. This will strengthen the societal and economic role of the Arctic region and support the EU strategy for the Arctic and related maritime and environmental policies.

The Geophysical Institute’s contribution in INTAROS requires personnel that both knows how to design a comprehensive monitoring scheme for the Arctic Ocean, are able to deploy and recover instruments, and analyse observations of ongoing changes in the ocean and sea ice domains. Geophysical Institute's main responsibility will be to set up a mooring system that can measure changes in sea ice formation, mixing below the ice, impacts for ocean physics and biogeochemistry, and how these interact. The mooring, properly equipped with novel technology, will stay in the ocean north of Svalbard for one year and provide a prototype and conceptual approach for how to monitor the ocean at high latitudes. If successful, this prototype will contribute to the plans included in the road map for future Arctic Ocean research. Within INTAROS, cooperation with another Post Doc at the GFI in atmospheric science is possible and encouraged.
