There is a vacancy as a full-time professor in Visual Communication at the Department of Design. The successful candidate should ideally be able to take up the post on 1/08/2018.

The Department of Design is part of the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen, a leading professional community offering research-based training at bachelor, master and PhD level. The faculty has around 600 students and 180 staff.

Duties/area of research
We are looking to appoint a professor who will be able to teach and engage in artistic research in a multidisciplinary environment. The role is relatively flexible in terms of own professional design profile. The successful applicant must have a wide professional design background and be motivated and qualified to work in cross-disciplinary contexts and projects. The appointee will also be actively involved in developing curricula at bachelor, master and PhD level.

In the area of visual communication, the Department has a wide understanding of what design may be, where our work is anchored in a critical perspective. We wish to educate unconventional and innovative designers who turn their attention to both real and speculative projects/situations. We offer an experimental, examining and curiosity based environment in which an open approach to what it will be like to be a human in an unknown future is in focus.

The applicants should command a wide vocabulary of expressions, be interested in different media, and be able to place visual communication in a larger historical, social and communicative context. We emphasise overview, a broad understanding and the capability of reflection around the subject field. The ideal applicant for the position must have wide and comprehensive experience and knowledge in one of the specialist fields such as: Typography, editorial design in various media, design activism, critical/speculative design, information design, etc.

The applicants must have a good knowledge of relevant design methods and be conceptually oriented, be articulate in the language of design, and conscious of the wider relevance of the field’s visual culture. Applicants who, in their projects and in their intellectual approach, address social and cultural conditions in an analytical, critical and/or transformative way, will be preferred.

Suitable applicants must have a strong focus on artistic development work and have the ability to integrate artistic development work into their teaching practice. The professional employees at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design have part of their working hours linked to artistic development work and research, and significant resources are allocated to this part of the work. Initiating collaboration and contact with educational institutions and other relevant collaborative partners are important tasks.

It is also expected that the successful applicant contributes input that strengthens the academic debate at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design and promotes the department externally - such as by developing professional networks locally, nationally and internationally.

The duties also include tuition, responsibility for educational programmes, dissemination, organising and facilitating these tasks as well as administrative tasks and other management duties.

It is also expected that the professor will provide advice and input to the department about the number of study places, education policy and subject portfolio.

The Department of Design
We wish to prepare and develop the field of design for a complex future full of challenges and possibilities. Our professional environment attracts national and international students, lecturers and researchers in design, who, with a critical approach, will reflect, discuss, examine and work in a contemporary age with more questions than answers.

This education is the highest in this field in Norway. We offer studies within the areas of visual communication and furniture and room design/interior architecture, and we emphasise that the students can make individual choices during their study programmes. The relationship between theory and practice and production and reflection is central in our design education and artistic research. Artistic research is comparable to scientific research and having a broadly composed professional staff, with employees who are practising designers both nationally and internationally, is a prerequisite for an education and research environment that is full of life.

At the Department of Design, you will find one of the most innovative education and research environments and the faculty’s wide spectrum of workshops is essential for experiments and exploration. Our professional environment is anchored in a clear social commitment, and prioritises the development and implementation of major research projects, also including external finance. The strategy is in line with UiB’s strategic focus area.

Qualifications and personal qualities
• Substantial artistic practice at the highest level and to international standards, as well as relevant scope and specialisation in the subject or discipline at the highest level.
• Basic education in pedagogics is a requirement for the position. The successful applicant will be offered training in this respect if this requirement is not met at the time of appointment.

The applicants’ professional competence will be assessed by an expert panel. The best qualified applicants will be invited to an interview and a trial lecture with an internal interview group.

In addition, administrative duties are linked to the position.

The teaching language is normally Norwegian, but English may also be used. It is a criterion that the successful candidate must be able to teach in Norwegian/Scandinavian language within two years of taking up the post. Applications who are unable to document having a basic teaching qualification before taking up the post will be offered training.

The appointment requires the successful candidate to work at the University of Bergen and be involved in the running of the department. The appointee must comply with the prevailing guidelines applicable to the position. Working hours are distributed as described in the annual, individual work schedule drawn up in consultation with the employee and head of department. The head of the department is responsible for co-ordinating all the study programmes in the department.
