The University of Bergen (UiB) is an internationally recognised research university with more than 14,000 students and close to 3,500 employees at six faculties. The university is located in the heart of Bergen. Our main contribution to society is excellent basic research and education across a wide range of disciplines.
PhD position in sedimentology and basin analysis
There is a vacancy for a PhD position at the Department of Earth Science to work on syn-rift sedimentation and tectonics. The position is for a fixed-term period of four years and is funded by UiB as part of Professor Rob Gawthorpe's appointment as VISTA Professor.
About the project / worktasks
The PhD research will focus on rift basin sedimentology and stratigraphy focusing on the Corinth Rift, Greece and will involve analysis of core material from the Gulf of Corinth collected as part of the IODP Expedition 381 and fieldwork on the onshore part of the rift.
The objective of this project is to understand how the basin infill of the Corinth Rift responds to different forcing factors in the hinterland areas of the rift, to those in the basin sink, and to factors inherent to the depositional system. This will be achieved through careful field work on basin margin depositional systems and associated structures, and through sedimentologial and palaeoenvironmental analysis core collected as part of the IODP Expedition 381.
Specific tasks for the study include:
Mapping of basin margin successions and associated structures along the southern border fault of the Corinth rift.
Sedimentological and stratigraphic analysis of core and outcrop.
Palaeoenvironmental analysis of core and outcrop.
Integration of structural, sedimentological and palaeoenvironmental data to reconstruct the main controls on rift margin and rift axis sedimentation.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
The applicant must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in earth science that is relevant to the project, or must have submitted his/her master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
Experience of process sedimentology is essential, preferably deltaic and turbidite depositional systems.
High level of fieldwork experience is essential, preferably involving syn-tectonic sedimentary studies linked to structural mapping.
Experience of basin analysis and integrating sedimentary and structural data is essential, preferably in rift basins.
Experience of working on core material, particularly involving high-resolution sampling and multi-proxy studies would be and advantage.
Work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
Evidence of the ability to give high-quality oral presentations and write research reports at a high standard in English is essential.
Experience of demonstrating or assisting in laboratory classes at undergraduate level would be an advantage.
