University of Bergen

Department of Earth Science

The University of Bergen (UiB) is an internationally recognised research university with more than 14,000 students and close to 3,500 employees at six faculties. The university is located in the heart of Bergen. Our main contribution to society is excellent basic research and education across a wide range of disciplines.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Numerical Modelling of Surface Processes in Rift Basins

There is a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Earth Science to work on sediment routing systems in rift basins using 3D numerical modelling. The position is for a fixed-term period of four years and is funded by UiB as part of Professor Rob Gawthorpe's appointment as VISTA Professor.

About the project/work tasks

The research will investigate controls on sediment routing systems in rift basins, such as the Corinth rift, Greece, and is part of a large research effort into understanding rift basin formation and the controls on rift basin stratigraphy between members of the Basin and Reservoir Studies and Geodynamics research groups at UiB. The postdoctoral researcher will work on: i) impact of pre-existing topography and drainage on syn-rift stratigraphy and normal faulting, and ii) evaluate the interaction between source-related sediment supply signals and sink-related base-level changes in controlling syn-rift stratigraphy.

The successful candidate will be expected to take a leading role in developing research in these areas and to publish results in leading peer-reviewed publications.  He/she will also be expected to participate in other activities/tasks such as teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, mentoring masters and PhD students (<25 % time) etc., providing him/her with the range of skills needed for an academic career.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • Applicants must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within Quantitative Sedimentology/Geodynamics, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
  • A suitable background and research interest in quantitative surface processes and/or tectonic modelling, and quantitative earth science is essential.
  • Experience with long term tectonic modelling, and application of finite element methods is considered an advantage.
  • Experience of quantitative analysis of sediment transport and deposition, and using this to understand controls on basin stratigraphy is a considerable advantage.
  • Experience of normal faulting/rift basin formation and its effects on erosion and/or depositional systems is an advantage.
  • Evidence of ability to present and publish the result of research at an international level in English and documented research potential.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.
