Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science is part of the Faculty of Science and Technology. The department carries out research within data, electricity and electronics, and offers bachelor programs in electrical- and computer engineering, master programs in computer science and cybernetics/signal processing, and a PhD program in information technology. The master program in computer science is an international program and is taught in english. There are currently 40 employees, including research fellows and postdocs, and 520 students at the departement.

 

Engineer in Computer Science

The University of Stavanger invites applications for a position as Engineer of Computer Science at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The position is vacant from 01.02.2018 or by appointment.

 

Work tasks:

  • Responsibility for safe operation of the department’s data center

  • Support operation of the faculty’s data center

  • Support the research carried out in the data group at the department

  • Participate in the teaching of relevant data subjects

  • Support guidance of bachelor and master students in computer science

 Applicants must hold following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science / Information technology. Master's degree is preferred, but good qualifications can compensate.

  • Have good knowledge of the operation of computer systems

  • Be able to handle hardware and software to ensure safe operation of computer systems

  • Good communication skills, with colleagues and students

  • Communicate in English, both written and oral

The position is paid according to the state wage regulation, l.pl. 90.301, code 1087 of Nkr 459 100 - 508 800 bto per year. In special cases higher pay can be considered.

 

The position automatically provides membership in the Government Pension Fund, which ensures good pension rights.

Job description

 

1. Organizational location:

  • The position holder is employed at the University of Stavanger. Currently, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science organize the position.

  • The laboratory leader at the department is manager to the position holder.

  • The position holder is a organized at the computer science at the department. She or he can also be included in projects regardless of organizational placement.

 2. Responsibilities:

  • Operation of the department's data center, and teaching and research support related to this.

 

3. Work tasks:

 

The main part of this position is the maintenance and further development of the department’s data center to support research and teaching in data center technology. The applicant should have good expertise in several of the following subject areas: GNU / Linux, cloud computing, container technology, data-intensive systems, distributed systems, distributed storage services, configuration management systems, infrastructure definition techniques, infrastructure monitoring, computer networks and data security. Knowledge of the following technologies, or their alternatives, is desirable:

  • Cloud computing platforms: OpenStack, OpenNebula, Amazon Web Services.

  • Data-intensive systems: Hadoop, Spark, HBase, Cassandra, Voldemort, Elasticsearch, Logstash

  • Configuration Management Systems: Puppet, Cook, Ansibel, SaltStack

  • Distributed storage solutions: Ceph, Luster, Gluster

  • Infrastructure Definition Technology: Foreman, Terraform

  • Container technology: Docker, Vagrant, Kubernetes

  • Monitoring and visualization: InfluxDB, Grafana, Collectd, NetFlow, SNMP, Kibana

  • Data networks: Routing, switching, load balance, L2-bridging, network virtualization

  • Information and network security: Access control, intrusion detection, firewalls, privacy, cryptography

  • Programming languages: Python, C ++ / Java, Go, shell scripting.

 The position involves collaborating  in teaching and research at the University of Stavanger, as well as administrative tasks. It is expected that the placement holder is kept up to date with the technology used in the data center, and technology relevant to teaching and research projects assigned to the position in periods. Other tasks may be added to the post.
