Department of Biosciences (IBV) is a research and education department at the University of Oslo. The Department has one Centre of Excellence and four research sections. The Department has 52 faculty members and associate professors, and approximately 190 PhD students, post docs and researchers, in addition to technical and administrative staff. The working environment is international, and scientists from over 30 countries contribute to the working environment. The Department aims to maintain high international standards both within research and teaching.
IBV offers research-based education within several aspects of bioscience, including ecology, behavioural ecology, evolution, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry, biomedicine, genetics, bioinformatics and biotechnology. Around 380 students are enrolled in bachelor’s programs, and 90 in master’s programs.

PhD Research Fellowship in Neuroscience

Position as a PhD research fellow available at the Department of Biosciences in the research group of Associate Professor Marianne Fyhn at the Center for Integrated Neuroplasticity (CINPLA).

The fellowship period is three years. Within the framework of the position duties may be assigned. Anticipated start date no later than 01.10.2017. No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo.

Project description:

In our laboratory we study neural processing and plasticity of neural circuits at multiple levels, from the morphological changes at the synapse to functional changes of network activity in behaving animals. The aim of the present project is to identify cell-specific and molecular contributions to neural information processing underlying complex behaviors. To achieve this, the candidate will use both in vivo and in vitro recording techniques including electrophysiology and multiphoton imaging in combination with genetic perturbations such as optogenetics. For in-depth understanding at different levels, complementary projects will develop computational models at a single neuron and network level. Thus, the project relies heavily on interdisciplinary principles and involves strong interaction between experimental neuroscience and mathematical modelling. As such, the successful candidate will work with experimental and computational neuroscience research groups at Simula Research Laboratory and the University of Oslo (www.mn.uio.no/ibv/english/research/sections/fyscell/cinpla).

Qualifications:

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has a strategic ambition of being a leading research faculty. Candidates for these fellowships will be selected in accordance with this, and expected to be in the upper segment of their class with respect to academic credentials.

The candidate must hold an MSc or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian master’s degree in Physiology, Neurobiology or similar field. The preferred candidate will have experience in experimental physiology, preferably from electrophysiology or imaging (e.g., multiphoton microscopy), in combination with behavior studies. The candidates should also be comfortable working with rodents and have good programming skills (e.g., Matlab/Python/LabVIEW). Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the project, the candidate should also have experience with or a strong interest in computational neuroscience.

The candidate should be able to work independently and structured, while at the same time engage in close collaborations.

English is the working language at both CINPLA and Simula, therefore an excellent command of English is required.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree. The candidate will have access to a range of PhD research schools and courses that provide both technical courses as well as transferrable skills courses and workshops. We provide broad training possibilities in the required experimental methods within a stimulating and interdisciplinary academic environment that provides outstanding training in experimental and computational neuroscience.
