The Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) is an interdisciplinary focus field for material and energy research at the University of Oslo. SMN has focused on basic research in renewable energy and environmentally friendly use of fossil energy sources. The center consists of research groups from the Department of Physics (Fi) and Chemistry (Ki), has about 100 employees from around the world and manages more than 80 projects funded by the EU, the RCN and others.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Theoretical Materials Science

Position as postdoctoral research fellow available at Department of Physics/Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology.

The fellowship period is 2 years. Within the framework of the position duties may be assigned. The successful candidate should be prepared to start within September 1st, 2017. No one can be appointed for more than one postdoctoral research fellowship at the same institution.

Job description/ Project description:

This fellowship is part of the project "Conversion between Magnetic, Electric, and Thermal energies in phase-transforming materials (COMET)", funded by the Research Council of Norway through the Frinatek program. It is collaboration between UiO and SINTEF Materials and Chemistry, and involves three external partners: University of Minnesota (UoM), The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), and California Institute of Technology (Caltech). The postdoctoral candidate will be working with prediction of transport properties of intermetallics and alloys based on density functional theory (DFT). It is expected that the candidate will perform a scientific visit to Caltech during the project.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a PhD degree or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree in physics. Candidates without a PhD degree must complete the final exam before 30 June 2017.

A general background in materials science is required. Previous experience in DFT modelling is a siginificant advantage. Experience with transport calculations is an advantage.

The main purpose of post-doctoral research fellowships is to qualify researchers for work in top academic positions within their disciplines.

Salary:

Position code 1352, Salary: NOK 486 100 – 567 100 per year, (pay grade 57 – 65), depending on qualifications and seniority.
