PhD Candidate in Geographic Information Science and Natural Resource Management

There is a temporary position available at the Department of Geography as PhD Candidate in Geographic Information Science and Natural Resource Management for a period of 4 years where 3 of the years are for research and 1 year is for teaching and other work for the department. This is an educational position that shall provide promising research recruits the opportunity for professional development through studies towards a PhD. The position is connected to the PhD-program at the Faculty of Social and Educational Sciences and the faculty will be the employer.

Currently, the Department employs 9 professors, 7 associate professors, 2 researchers, 2 post doctors and 13 PhD candidates. The Department has defined four strategic areas: Natural hazards and the effects of climate change; Environment, resources and management; Mobility, transnationalism and inequality; and Innovation and regional changes.

The available PhD position will contribute particularly to the department’s strategic area Environment, resources, and management. The PhD position is about using crowdsourcing to collect spatial data in order to monitor and enhance transparency in the management of high-value natural resource revenues. The PhD project should develop and examine crowdsourcing and participatory GIS in the context of non-renewable, high-value resources with a particular emphasis on collecting information on how natural resource revenues are spent at a local level and to uncover to what degree there is transparency about natural resource revenue management. Using crowdsourcing, the aim of the PhD project is to develop a system to track 1) the success of the implementation of development projects funded by natural resource revenues in terms of quantity and quality, 2) to what degree citizens feel their needs and demands are taken into account in project implementation, and 3) whether citizens feel they have received information about local and national resource revenue spending. By providing location specific information on these issues, those with responsibility for resource revenue management should get enhanced capacity to monitor natural resource revenue spending at the local level and target the areas in need for information campaigns.

Obligations

The holder of the position is expected to:

  • Contribute to other projects at the department where crowdsourcing is of importance, such as Citizen Sensing – Urban Climate Resilience through Participatory Risk Management Systems (CitiSense), Climate change and natural hazards: the geography of community resilience in Norway (ClimRes) www.climres.no, and GEO GO: game based approach to field course education www.ntnu.edu/geo-go.
  • Contribute to teaching of GIS courses at the department

Qualifications

We seek a passionate, dedicated and sociable person who meets the required qualifications for a PhD candidate. The applicant must have generally strong technical skills and particularly within geographical information technologies. Independency, solution-oriented attitude as well as motivation to contribute to a good working environment at the department will be ascribed high importance. The requirement for the position is a completed master’s degree in geography, geomatics or natural resource management with documented strong background in geographic information science, or similar education to equivalent level. Applicants must have a strong academic record from their previous studies, and must have a weighted average grade for the last two years of their master's or equivalent education (equivalent to 120 credits) of B or higher in terms of NTNU's grading scale. Applicants with no letter grades from previous studies must have an equally good academic foundation. Applicants who are unable to meet these criteria may be admitted only if they can document that they are particularly suitable candidates for education leading to a PhD degree. Fluent English skills are required.

Salary and Working Conditions

The PhD position is paid according to salary level 50 in the national salary scheme, minimum gross NOK 432 300 per year, of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension Scheme.

The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The employee is expected to accept possible changes in work tasks. Primary residency in Trondheim is a prerequisite.

The project description needs to discuss the development, implementation and application of a crowdsourcing system to follow up projects financed by natural resource revenues in Ghana (for example, projects funded by the Annual Budget Funding Amount (ABFA)), or similar crowdsourcing system for another potential case in another country.

Joint scientific work will be evaluated. If it is difficult to identify the contributions from individuals in a join piece of work, applicants must enclose a short descriptive summary of what he/she contributed to the joint work.
