Postdoctoral Research Fellow in microbiology at Department of Biology, University of Bergen
A vacancy is open for a postdoctoral research fellow in microbiology at Department of Biology, University of Bergen, within the research group General Microbiology. The position is for a period of 3 years and is funded by the FRIPRO program of the Research Council of Norway.
About the project/work tasks
The position is linked to the research project «Methane oxidation by extremophilic Verrucomicrobia adapted to geothermal environments», funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project aims to enhance the basic understanding of the mechanism, regulation and evolution of biological methane oxidation, with focus on heat- and acid-adapted («thermo-acidophilic») methanotrophic bacteria thriving in volcanic environments.
Work tasks will include growth-physiology and molecular studies of extremophilic methane oxidizing bacteria belonging to the phylum Verrucomicrobia and their key enzymes for methane oxidation. Travels abroad for project work is expected. The work will also involve scientific reporting, preparation of manuscripts and co-supervision of students also working within the framework of this project.
About the position of postdoctoral research fellow
The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. The fixed-term period for this position is three years. If the appointee lack teaching experience, the employment period may be increased to up to three years and three months, where the three extra months are funded by the department. Teaching and other duties of the department, will in that case be added as duties of the position. Individuals cannot be hired for more than one fixed-term period as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same institution.
After appointment, the project plan, including a schedule, must be prepared in cooperation with the project manager/supervisor. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
The applicant must hold a PhD or an equivalent degree within a relevant area, e.g. in microbiology or molecular biology, or must have submitted his/her doctoral thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded.
Experience from work with microorganisms and relevant molecular biology approaches e.g. gene technology, whole genome analysis, heterologous gene expression, protein biochemistry, transcriptomics or genetic analyses of prokaryotes will be considered favorable.
Ability to conduct independent research; work in a structured manner, and to cooperate nicely with others.
Proficiency in both written and oral English.
