Research fellow (PhD candidate) in microbiology at the Department of Biology
A vacancy for a PhD position is available in microbiology at the Department of Biology, University of Bergen, within the research group General Microbiology. The position is for a fixed-term period of 4 years.
About the project/work tasks
The position is linked to the research project «Methane oxidation by extremophilic Verrucomicrobia adapted to geothermal environments», funded by the Research Council of Norway. The project aims to enhance the basic understanding of the mechanism, regulation and evolution of biological methane oxidation, with focus on heat- and acid-adapted («thermo-acidophilic») methanotrophic bacteria thriving in volcanic environments.
Work tasks will include growth-physiology and molecular studies of extremophilic methane oxidizing bacteria belonging to the phylum Verrucomicrobia and their key enzymes for methane oxidation. Shorter travels abroad for project work or conference participation is expected.
Qualifications and personal qualities:
The applicant must hold a Master's degree or the equivalent in microbiology or molecular biology, or must have submitted his/her Master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the Master's degree has been awarded.
Experience from work with microorganisms and relevant molecular biology approaches e.g. gene technology, whole genome sequence analysis, heterologous gene expression and transcriptomics will be considered favorable.
Ability to work independently and in a structured manner, and cooperate with others simultaneously.
Proficiency in both written and oral English
About the PhD position
The duration of the PhD position is 4 years, of which 25 percent comprises required duties associated with research, teaching and dissemination of results. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a recruitment position.
About the research training
As a PhD Candidate, you must participate in an approved educational program for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have commenced the position. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD program at the University of Bergen.
