PhD Research Fellowship position in Secure Networking Technologies

The Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering (IME) at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has a vacancy for a full-time position as a PhD candidate (100%) at Department of Telematics (ITEM).

The appointment is for a term of 3 years without teaching assistance and up to 4 years including 25% of teaching assistance.

  

Information about the department

 

Telematics is the area of communication networks and networked systems encompassing technological, societal and economical aspects. Department of Telematics has 15 tenured professors, 14 adjunct professors and about 30 PhD students and Postdocs. Department of Telematics performs research and research-based education at a very high international level. The department is to be the leading research group in the telematics/networking field in Norway, and also have a leading position in Europe in chosen disciplines within its research areas.

  

Work description

 

The researcher will work on a project entitled “Securing emerging network technologies with homomorphic encryption”. The overall aim of the project is to design methods for secure processing of network data in emerging networks using practical variants of homomorphic encryption. Recent advances in cryptography will be applied to secure the virtualization of the ICT infrastructure (such as “cloud” processing and storage) and new flexible networking technologies such as software defined networks (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). Work tasks will include: analysis of suitable network functions for homomorphic processing; analysis of practical homomorphic encryption algorithms; secure protocol design and analysis; and experimental implementations.

  

Qualifications

 

A master's degree in telematics, computer science or related areas, with very good results, is required - average grade B or better, or education at the equivalent level. Great importance will be attached to personal suitability. Needed background is Business modelling, economics as well as Networking, Information and data modelling.

 

Applicants who do not master a Scandinavian language must provide evidence of good English language skills, written and spoken. The following tests can be used as such documentation: TOEFL, IELTS or Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Minimum scores are:

  • TOEFL: 600 (paper-based test), 92 (Internet-based test)

  • IELTS: 6.5, with no section lower than 5.5 (only Academic IELTS test accepted)

  • CAE/CPE: grade B or A.


Formal regulations

Appointments are made in accordance with the regulations in force regarding terms of employment for PhD candidates issued by the Ministry of Education and Research, with relevant parts of the additional guidelines for appointment as a PhD candidate at NTNU. Applicants must undertake to participate in an organized PhD programme of study during their period of employment. The person who is appointed must comply with the conditions that apply at any time to employees in the public sector. In addition, a contract will be signed regarding the period of employment.

Salary conditions

The position follows code 1017, Research Fellow, salary grade 50-57in the Norwegian State salary scale. Normal wage level is gross NOK 432.300 – NOK 488.900 per year, depending on qualifications. A deduction of 2% is made as a statutory contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.
