BERGEN UNIVERSITY COLLEGE (HØGSKOLEN I BERGEN – HiB) is one of the largest university colleges in Norway, with about 7700 students and 830 academic and administrative staff. HiB offers high quality study programmes directed towards specific professions within health and social sciences, engineering, teacher and preschool teacher education. R&D activities of particular strength are organized in programmes in order to promote research-based education.

The Faculty for Teacher Education has approximately 2300 students and 200 staff. The faculty offers a four-year basic teacher education programme for teaching at primary and lower-secondary school levels, as well as a bachelor degree for nursery school level. In addition, master’s degree courses and 30- and 60-credit courses in specialist subjects are offered, as well as in-service courses. There are two research centres, the Centre for Education Research and the Centre for Arts, Culture and Communication. There is also a PhD programme entitled ‘The study of education and didactic practices’. From 2017, the faculty will offer a five-year teacher training programme in which English will be one of the core master’s subjects.
