Bioforsk is a Norwegian R&D institute specialising in the fields of agriculture and food production, environmental protection and natural resource management. Bioforsk focuses on research-based innovation, value creation and sustainable resource utilisation. Bioforsk aims to be a regionally, nationally and internationally competitive knowledge producer and service provider. The institute consists of three research divisions and numerous branches spread throughout the country. In July 2015, Bioforsk will merge with two sister institutes, and will become one of Norway’s largest research institutes.

Bioforsk Division Environment is one of three divisions and carry out research and commissioned services in the following fields: soil quality and soil resources, greenhouse gases and carbon storage, run-off from agricultural land, water quality and water resource management, land use, natural purification processes, biological waste processing, energy and fertiliser resources in biomass. The department Water quality and hydrology works in the following thematic areas: water quality, hydrology, ground water, hydrogeology, water quality monitoring, statistical analysis, integrated water resources management, policy analysis, socio-economics, resource economics and stakeholder involvement. A cross cutting theme of high focus is climate change impacts on water resources.
