Research position in ocean climate modelling at Uni Research Climate

A researcher position in ocean climate modelling is available at Uni Research Climate. The position is a three-year contract with a preferred starting date of June 1st 2015.The position is under the Ice2Ice project funded by the European Research Council under the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013)/ERC grant agreement No. 610055. The partner institutions in the project are Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Danish Metrological Institute, Uni Research Climate and Institute of Earth Science, University of Bergen. The Ice2Ice project works on identifying whether Arctic and sub-Arctic sea ice cover exerts important controls on past and future Greenland temperature and ice sheet variations. This particular position will focus on improving the representation of high latitude ocean processes in a coupled climate model.

Uni Research Climate is a department of Uni Research AS, and is one of four partners in the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), which is the largest climate research centre in the Nordic countries and among the leading centres in Europe.

Position overview
At present, state-of-the-art global climate models are unable to accurately simulate the observed temperature and salinity structure of the Arctic ocean where warm, salty Atlantic water is isolated from the atmosphere by a strong salinity gradient (halocline) and a fresh surface layer with extensive sea ice cover. As a consequence, climate models do not capture the sensitivity of Arctic sea ice to changes in radiative forcing. The accurate simulation of the Arctic sea ice-ocean system is crucial for the Ice2Ice project and this position should contribute to diagnose Arctic biases in the Norwegian Earth System Model and improve the representation of high latitude processes in the ocean component of this model. To reduce simulated Arctic biases one might also consider model improvements that are not specific to the Arctic Ocean due to the importance of exchanges with surrounding seas.

Required qualifications

  • PhD degree in meteorology, oceanography, physics, mathematics or related fields, or has presented the dissertation for assessment by the closing date for applications. It is a prerequisite that the dissertation has been approved before appointment is granted.
  • Considerable experience in numerical modelling.

Desired qualifications

  • Experience in large scale ocean modelling.
  • Experience in ocean process modelling.
  • Experience in data analysis.
  • Ability to work independently as well as make positive team contributions.

The position is a three-year contract with a preferred starting date of June 1st 2015. Salary by agreement. Uni Research has comprehensive employee insurances and pension agreements and is an equal opportunity employer. The successful applicant must comply with the guidelines that apply to the position at any time. In the collaborative spirit of Ice2Ice, the successful candidate is expected to participate in research exchange visits to project partners in Copenhagen.
